Product Description

From Library Journal

Chosen by fate to become the Dragon Reborn--savior and destroyer of his world--young Rand al'Thor attempts to outrun his destiny by joining in a mad search for the lost Horn of Valere. Continuing the story begun in The Eye of the World ( LJ 2/15/90), Jordan creates a lush, sprawling tapestry of a novel in the tradition of Tolkien and Eddings. Recommended where fantasy is popular.

From AudioFile

THE GREAT HUNT is the second novel in Robert Jordan's massive Wheel of Time fantasy series. Michael Kramer and Kate Reading alternate sections, depending on which character (male or female) holds the shifting point of view. The large book is slow moving, especially at the beginning. Kramer and Reading help the prose along, providing much-needed spark to the characters. The author continually drags the story back to petty arguments between male and female characters, which becomes tedious. On the plus side, the action scenes, Jordan's specialty, are excellent. 3.0 out of 5 stars Arg...so good and so bad at the same time....., April 6 2007
By E. Haensel (Toronto) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This book is incredibly inconsistant, a see-saw, like walking on thin ice: you will experience the blissful feeling of crusing along with the story immersed in a wonderous world full of imagination, drama, and unique characters and then suddenly the bubble bursts, a cold shocking confrontation with crusty unchanging attitudes and events that grind against your brain, and back, and forth....

If you enjoyed the Eye of the World you will enjoy this book, or atleast most of it, and the story is still progressing well. It remains intersting and the good points are very strong. A few of the characters in this book are so intriguing and enjoyable that they manage to sustain the reader through the rigid predicatable outbursts by the rest of the crew.

As a whole it is not a good book, but, then again, its also not a bad book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily as good as the first, Nov 24 2006
By Zidane "ffguru44" (Edmonton, AB CAN) - See all my reviews
I was worried that this second book in the Wheel of Times series couldn't live up to the first, and I'm happy to say there was no need to worry at all. Despite a slow start (again), the action eventually picks up, and this time the characters start to go their own ways. We get to learn more about the world that Jordan has created, and there are some interesting points of view, such as part of a chapter told from the perspective of Paidan Fain. This book tends to be a little more graphic than The Eye of the World, but is just as good if not better than it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic epic fantasy. Top notch., Jul 12 2004
I am a fan of big, fat fantasy volumes, this should be said first. I would rather take my time and absorb a world slowly than slice through it quickly. Not everybody has this preference, I know, and what people like is what they like.

Robert Jordan gives us a richly detailed world to soak in, but it still does not feel like sloggish reading. So far, so good.

Character development is very good and represents a nice continuation of 'Eye of the World.' While I liked EotW, I was more connected with the characters after 'The Great Hunt.'

The world is richly detailed and characters have been given more depth. There is some reward at the end for those who have been faithfully moving through the story.

There is some torture, but it is described only mildly. This is a relief after reading some of Terry Goodkind's graphic torture description. In fact, when I realized they were using a collar to control and cause pain, I had a mini-learned-Goodkind-fear response. (Hats off to Goodkind for that, I guess). However, Jordan is a little more gentle with the reader. Thanks Robert.

As in most fantasy stories, there is some derivation. However, these are not needless and Jordan has created his own world. I have enjoyed these books and will read the rest of the series. In fact, the Dragon Reborn is ordered and should arrive today.

Overall, this is a great and enveloping story that is perfect for the fantasy fan and is accpetable for younger readers (who have the necessary reading skills).
