Amazon.ca Canadian Essential

Of course L.M. Montgomery is still best known for her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, likely the most famous (and best loved) Canadian book of any kind. But many fans who have read further in her work come to love her later Emily books even more. Beginning with 1924's Emily of New Moon, their story of a young girl's growing ambition to be a writer has influenced generations of young Canadian writers who followed. --Ce texte provient de la Mass Market Paperback édition.

Anne may be L.M. Montgomery's most famous heroine, but as far as fans of the Emily books are concerned she can't compare with the elfin poet of New Moon. Emily, who was also Montgomery's favourite character, bears a certain resemblance to Anne. Like the spunky, red-headed orphan of Green Gables, 10-year-old Emily Byrd Starr loses both her parents and ends up living with a stern spinster in a remote but beautiful farming community on Prince Edward Island. Also like Anne, her high spirits get her into lots of mischief. But the raven-haired Emily, with her purple eyes and come-hither smile, is a more conventionally romantic heroine than Anne. While Anne of Green Gables is the ugly-duckling tale of a young girl's yearning for love and acceptance, Emily's ethereal looks guarantee her admirers from the beginning.

What Emily wants desperately is to be a writer. As she explains to her teacher, "Why, I have to write--I can't help it by times--I've just got to." In this novel and its two sequels, Emily Climbs and Emily's Quest, Montgomery tells the moving and semi-autobiographical story of Emily's struggle to realize her ambition. The opening chapters of Emily of New Moon, dealing with the death of Emily's consumptive father, are awkward and melodramatic. But few children's novels--Little Women and Harriet the Spy come to mind--offer as fine a portrait of an artistic child's imaginative inner life. Spend some time with Emily and her friends and you'll be a fan, too. (Ages 9 to 12) --Lisa Alward --Ce texte provient de la Mass Market Paperback édition.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Emily of New Moon, Jui 17 2003
Par Un client
"Emily of New Moon" is about a girl named Emily Byrd Starr. Her father dies when she is 10 years old, leaving her an orphan. She is spoiled and sometimes disagreeable, so none of her relitives want her. They draw lots. Emily's aunts, Elizabeth and Laura Murray and her coisen, Jimmy, end up with her. Emily has to learn to ajust at her new home in Blair Water, called New Moon, which she does pretty quickly. In the book, she writes letters to her father, makes friends with Ilse Burnley and Teddy Kent, and learns many valuble lessons. If you liked "Anne of Green Gables", you will love "Emily of New Moon"!

4.0étoiles sur 5 Definitely worth reading, Fév 8 2003

(REAL NAME)
Although Emily has a lot of things in common with Anne--both eleven-year-old orphans who live on Prince Edward Island in the nineteenth century--she is a different kind of girl, and hers is a different kind of story. It's great from beginning to end, and the mystery of Ilse's mother had me on the edge of my seat--great suspense. The only thing I didn't like about the story was that it said mean, untrue things about atheists. But I suppose it was a product of its time.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Just as good as "Anne of Green Gables"!, Oct. 5 2002
"Emily of New Moon" is about Emily Starr who is orphaned when her father dies and she has to go and live at New Moon with her Aunt Elizabeth. Her aunt is 'stiff' and very, very strict. She doesn't want Emily at all and Emily feels the very same way about her aunt, except that Emily finds out that she actually liked New Moon. Emily is pretty, imaginative, loving, and sometimes rebellious. She discovers that she loves to write poetry and that she wants to become a famous writer one day.

Her school teacher, Mrs. Brownwell, give her a bad time and the students are unfriendly. Emily nearly gets totally depressed when her only friend leaves her and makes friends with a town girl instead of Emily. She soon makes friends with Illse Burnley and is best friends with her throughout the rest of the story.

Lucy Maud Montgomery has a very interesting way of writing stories.I loved "Anne of Green Gables" and this book is really good! If you liked "Anne of Green Gables", I know you'll like this book, too!
