Product Description

From Amazon.com

Taking a break from his phenomenally successful Alex Cross series, James Patterson's When the Wind Blows is as much child's fantasy as it is an adult nightmare. The novel moves away from the gritty Washington, D.C., setting of the Cross books and follows the daily life of Frannie O'Neill, a Colorado veterinarian. After the mysterious death of her husband several years before, Frannie retreated to an isolated life in her Colorado practice. But a series of bizarre events suddenly disrupts her lonely routine. On a personal level, she is shaken by her new tenant--Kit Harrison. Kit's too handsome and too friendly and he's a hunter (or so Frannie thinks). He's also recovering from a devastating personal tragedy, and, as Frannie eventually learns, he's really an FBI agent using his vacation to follow a crucial lead. But Kit isn't the one that's got Frannie concerned. As she says after stopping her Suburban one night to check out something on the side of the road: "What I saw was way beyond my abilities to imagine, beyond my comprehension, my system of belief, and maybe beyond my ability to communicate right now. The little girl's arms were folded back in a peculiar way, but when she lifted them--feathers fanned out." The girl is Max, and the mystery of her wings leads Frannie and Kit into a massive conspiracy involving secret genetic research and the scientific manipulation of the human species.

Patterson, a former advertising executive who coined such catchy phrases as "Nupe it!," knows how to entertain. His chapters are always short (some only two pages), and his writing is clear and unobtrusive; the reading experience is brisk--akin to watching a summer blockbuster. The book is not as dark or as weighty as the tales of detective-psychologist Alex Cross, but while some fans may be disappointed by Patterson's migration from pure suspense fiction, his first-person narrator Frannie, has a quirky realism that keeps this flight of fancy mostly on stable ground. --Patrick O'Kelley --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0étoiles sur 5 A Science Fiction..that's for sure, Avril 9 2004

Okay, so maybe I don't care for science fiction. And that's the reason for the 3-star. But overall, I stayed with this book because I wanted to know how it ended. So that makes three Patterson novels for me in less than a week. I could see myself either tiring of this writer's work or feeling the book simply wasn't right for me. Now grant it, the book might really float someone else's boat...but not mine. I'd say if you like science fiction, then this is a fairly good book. If you don't..then don't go there. Children with wings and flying all around, and things that you just find almost impossible to believe. It's time for me to move on and read someone else's work. Patterson is an excellent writer, but even excellent writers get carried away at times. ;-)

2.0étoiles sur 5 Impressive to the Easily Impressed, Déc 6 2003

Many people have given this book 5 stars. I would give 5 stars to The Brothers Karamazov, Les Miserables, East of Eden, etc. I am being generous to give this book two stars. Please, people, maintain a little perspective.

The premise is tired. Genetic experimentations. Children with no nipples that can fly (okay--the no nipples thing was at least an original. It's actually one of the few things I can remember about this forgettable little volume!). A rogue agent that follows his conscience instead of the FBI bureau policy, who also happens to be really hunky. Crooked people in high places. A heroine, who happens to be beautiful and looks good through windows while naked, that hates then loves the good guy. A bad guy that cares nothing about anything but evil greed and power. Not one of these characters would be missed if they got shot or drowned, since they could easily be replaced by any number of other pop-fiction cliches.

The writing is poor. I say this honestly, not to be contrary. It is flat, staccato, and more technical than artistic.

The outcome is a foregone conclusion. It is unfortunately an imagination-free event with lots of crashing and shooting. I won't ruin it for you; but hey, you really will know it within the first 40 pages of the book. All that you will be reading to learn at that point are the incidental details.

I was glad when this book was done. If you find someone or something real to relate to I suppose you will like it. But I think if it were written by someone other than a bestselling author, it might have gone straight to the paperback section at a truck stop.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Disappointed, Juil 14 2004
Par Un client
James Patterson was an author recommended to me but I unfortunately bought his When the Wind Blows first. I liked the short chapters. The plot was completely predictable though, and the book probably should have ended halfway through. I was constantly trying to figure out who the "I" was that was speaking because it read like a man's point of view and not the heroine, Frannie. If it were not for the very slight touch of romance and the swear words, I would recommend this book to my 11 year old. Having read some of the other reviews, I will choose a different one of Patterson's books (certainly not The Lake House since it is a continuation of When the Wind Blows)and try to figure out how his books have become #1 bestsellers.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Boring.
This book is umpredictably dispointing. It's a completely non-sense thriler. By the way, Patterson is umpredictable himself: very good books mxed with bad ones.
