A joyous rendition by Carole Boyd portrays a little girl's life in Liverpool in the nineteenth century. Lily had dreamed of going to sea as captain of her father's boat. But her Pa died, and she and her mother have been left with nothing but a dreary future. As Boyd recounts the tale, we are held in awe by the environment she creates with her enchanting voice: the peacefulness of the quiet sea, the soft lapping of the waves. Every vocal change enhances a well-researched plot. If not for books, who would remember that there were nine mail deliveries per day in the good old days? An 11-year-old companion sat transfixed while listening to the performance. When asked if she liked the story, she replied, "I love her voice." That sums it up. J.P.
