About the Author

Since selling his first ghost story to a radio station as a teenager, Simon Clark has had a prolific career as a horror writer. His previous novels include This Rage of Echoes and Midnight Bazaar - A Secret Arcade of Strange and Eerie Tales, also published by Robert Hale. Having previously worked as both a strawberry-picker and a shelf-stacker, Simon Clark now writes full-time and has won a British Fantasy Society Award for his work.

Clark supplies another brisk, entertaining and inventive horror novel. An ancient pagan religious site in a coastal town is being washed away because of the effects of harbour dredging, gradually loosening the hold that the 'Ghost Monster' -- a 250-year-old mosaic -- has on the evil 18th-century spirits caged beneath the site.

The leader of those spirits is also the worst of them, a Justice Murrain who terrorized the town and the surrounding area during the first half of the 18th century, and can now do so again. And only his descendants, a team of archaeologists summoned to the site to save as many artifacts as possible from the sea, and pre-Christian magic can stop him.

I enjoyed this novel a lot, though the copy-editing is crazy-bad at times, as it is in so many contemporary books which sometimes seem to have only been vetted by a computer before going to press. Recommended.
