4.0 out of 5 stars The Dark Beginning of Sherlock Holmes Continues!, Aug 26 2005
The Dark Water picks up precisely where The Night Calls left off, though it is not absolutely necessary to have read the latter. After falling into Cream's trap at the Morland house, Doyle is imprisoned by the serial killer in a small cottage somewhere in the English countryside. Doyle is kept weakened during his captivity by repeated administrations of laudanum and for days remains helpless at the torturous hands of his personal Moriarty.
Not surprisingly, the young doctor escapes Cream's clutches, but as a result, finds himself the subject of a local manhunt for a murderer- a lovely twist that truly makes the reader feel that Doyle and Doctor Bell have come upon an adversary that will stretch them to their very limits. Doyle makes his way back to Edinburgh and seeks out his old friend and mentor, Dr. Joseph Bell, the future inspiration for Doyle's most famous literary character. Together, they begin their own personal manhunt for the elusive Cream to fulfill their vow to fight against a future of further meaningless killings.
Their hunt keeps pace for the next 150 pages of the novel, but then Pirie does something quite characteristic of his novels- he switches gears and shifts Cream somewhat to the background. For a time, the novel loses momentum as Doyle and the Doctor confront the strange disappearance of Oliver Jefford and the legend of the of the Dunwich Witch. Pirie takes a bit of time to build up a compelling gothic atmosphere. The village of Dunwich is the image of decay and death. The sea is slowly eating away at the coastal town's ancient homes, church, and graveyard. Superstition abounds amidst the coastal community complete with thick woods, foggy marshes, treacherous cliffs, and of course, the dark water of the Witch's pool.
The novel picks up pace once again as the case comes to a close. The twists continue to come as Doyle and the Doctor get dangerously closer and closer to Cream.
The mystery Pirie has cooked up in The Dark Water is Holmesian genius. This is that fix all Sherlockian addicts have been looking for since first finishing the canon. Pirie convincingly voices Arthur Conan Doyle as he slowly reveals the future author's inspiration for Sherlock Holmes.
The cover and binding on this Arrow printed book is pretty hardy and exceptional for a paperback too.
