Product Description

Product Description

Steeplechase jockeys, like all other professional sportsmen, have to find a second career for themselves as the years go by. Jonah Dereham, retiring from the saddle at thirty-two, chooses to become a bloodstock agent and spends his life travelling round racehorse sales, finding and bidding for the sort of horse each of his clients wants. Jonah wants only to mind his own business, but several disturbing incidents force him to realise that someone is out to ruin him, and to survive he has to find the answers. A couple of bully boys begin to put the boot in, and Jonah finds himself progressively forced to fight for the survival of his brother who hits the bottle; helped by a blonde in an orange MGB, he presses onward to a rough conclusion.

Ingram

A once-famous jockey soon finds himself caught up in a gang-type horse-trading racket and more danger than he could have ever imagined. 2 cassettes. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars My last Francis, Jun 18 2001
By A Customer
Knockdown I found to inspire me to no longer read Dick Francis. He writes thrillers, not mysteries--lots of action with a predictable and hackneyed plot but no interesting sleuthing to at least spice it up as in an Agatha Christie. This book has some interesting sections on the "behind-the-scenes" world of purchasing horses and kickbacks. However, these bits of interest are outweighed by the silliness of the "tragic hero" with regards to both the love affair and Crispin.

If you like thrillers I guess it'll do but if you're looking for a mystery it's a poor choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars A jolly good read for an idle afternoon or a cold night., May 16 1997
By A Customer
This is one of his better books.I have always enjoyed his restrained way of writing.the different thing about his writing, that not only is his storyline strong, but that his characters are so well fleshed out. nowadays when reading a book so often is an adventure into strange exploits of the main characters, that its good to know someone can get his point across without resorting to cheap thrills.
