Ellie's found her Mr. Right—too bad his mom's got him all wrapped up in her apron strings. Ellie's mom was an alcoholic who died when Ellie was 13, so it's understandable that at first she's "over the moon" about being embraced by Dan's entire family. But poor Ellie never saw the meddlesome Mrs. Cooper coming. Mrs. Cooper calls her three times a day at work, plays devoted son against desperate daughter-in-law, takes control of the wedding plans and then, after the wedding and then birth of Ellie's son, Tom, seems to forget that Ellie even exists ("Hello, my gorgeous boys," she croons into the answering machine). More and more significant troubles loom: having a baby is hard! Marriage is hard! Green offers scenes of real pathos. ("We've become one of those couples that I used to dread becoming: the couples that sit in restaurants all night and don't say a word to each other"). The setup is solid, but the prose is flat: Ellie narrates with all the energy and élan of a bored, middle-aged housewife. She perks up, though, at the requisite happy ending. Yet again Green ventures into the world of family relationships--this time between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. In fact, the mother-in-law is the eponymous "other woman" who plagues each of the characters in the marriages Green brings to life. Ellie marries Dan, whose mother, Linda, wants to plan every aspect of their lives, from the marriage to the baby's room. The other marriages depicted are no less uncomfortable. Josephine Bailey brings these situations to life in quiet tones with inflections that run from stoic to frustrated to angry. While Bailey's narration is superb, Green's story is not for the faint of heart or the shaky relationship. it was the first book i read from jane green and i really enjoyed reading this. I really got attached to the main character and I was hooked from page one. i strongly reccommend this book.

This kind of book is not my usual kind of read, but it was recommended to me by a friend who just loved it, I had no reason not to read it. But to my surprise, it was an amazing book, one of my new favorite books. I could not put it down, The author kept me glued, action happening left right, and center.

This is a story of a newly married couple, Dan and Ellie Cooper. After the proposal she realized who the other woman is her mother in Law, who is ever woman's worst nightmare

Ellies mother passed when she was just a teenager, so she spent most of her life without another woman in her life, so she craved the whole mother daughter bond. After meeting Dan she was anxious to meet his mother of whom he talked so much about. They got along great, they had so much in common, she loved it. The family was really close, almost too close. She began to realize as the relationship grew into marriage. When Mrs. Cooper took full control of the wedding, she finally knew what she was getting into. Soon came the baby, Ellie was not going to let Mrs. Cooper take over the baby like she did the wedding, so she distanced herself away from her, and Dan. As Ellie and Dan grew apart so did their marriage, months later Dan moved back in with his parents while they their marriage continued to get worse. Divorce papers looked to be coming in the future.

I highly recommend reading this book, it was fantastic, I am looking forward to reading more novels by Jane Green. Extremely talented author.

This is one of those rare treats. You read it once and then you go back and read it again. The humor is fantastic, the monsterish mother-in-law is dead-on, and the heroine is lovable. I never wanted it to end! I also enjoy the Shopaholic books and Johanna Edwards's debut.
