4.0 out of 5 stars A serious story, Feb 22 2009

This review is from: Mr Clarinet (Hardcover)
Natural Law, Science, and the Social Construction of Reality

Max Mingus, former cop, former P.I. newly released from prison gets hired to find a child who has been missing for three years.

On the surface this is a mystery but beneath the mystery we get a real serious look at Haiti, one of the poorest countries on the planet.

We learn about government corruption, we learn about the corruption of the U.N. and American forces there: how they do little to address the real issues and end up exploiting the people instead of helping them. We learn how drug smugglers from producing countries bring their drugs to Haiti and then bring them into the States.

And we learn about Max Mingus, a real, interesting character, who gets caught up in internal conflicts since the child he is looking for is from one of the wealthy families.

I don't want to go into too many details, for if I mention one, it will lead to another, and I will give too much away.

This is a serious novel in the guise of a detective story. But the detective is also a great character. I look forward to more Max Mingus.
