From Publishers Weekly

Prince Vulkan, master of the vampires, has loosed his army of the undead on Los Angeles in this seamlessly written horror novel by the author of Mine. Vulkan's plan is to replace humankind, city by city, with the living dead. Four people stand in his way. Homicide detective Andy Palatazin, a Hungarian immigrant who fled this scourge as a child, is determined to stop it now. Young Tommy Chandler, whose parents were killed before his eyes, wants revenge. TV star Wes Richer hopes to save his beloved by tracking Vulkan to his lair. Father Silvera, a dying priest, believes that God has chosen him to destroy the vampire prince. Wreaking death and carnage, Vulkan proceeds to a final confrontation between the forces of good and evil. McCammon delivers terror with skillful ferocity as he pays tribute to masters of the genre and raises the standards for the craft a notch or two.

From Kirkus Reviews

First hardcover edition of an early (1981) mass-market paperback by the increasingly popular and accomplished McCammon (see Boy's Life, reviewed above). An epic tale of an army of vampires bent on world dominion, the adrenalized, splatter-happy narrative, set in Los Angeles, reflects McCammon's pulp-horror roots even as, in its richness of character and subplot, it presages his latter work (and the influence of Stephen King). Suspenseful, exciting, and visceral--Prince Vulkan of the vampires makes a particularly nasty impression--and a treat for new-found McCammon fans. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. I wore my cross for over a month after reading this book. Granted, I was 12 and just beginning to read about vampires, but, nevertheless, such a reaction cannot be ignored. Now 19, I have forgotten many plot details but still recall certain descriptions and the consistently chilling mood of the story. I recommend this book to any fan of the vampire genre, and the horror genre in general. Read this for an emotional response, not literary evaluation. I remember being vaguely dissatisfied by the ending, though that hasn't diminished my opinion of the book or my determination to read it again.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Great premise, but ending was a letdown., Mai 21 2004
Par Un client
This novel is the logical extension of King's 'Salem's Lot.' Instead of a small town being overrun by vampires, it is a metropolis. McCammon excels in detail. He really has a knack for description and metaphor. In short, he can really paint a picture in your mind. The characters are fleshed out nicely for a novel of this genre.

The reason I think Salem's Lot is superior is that King really understood what was scary in a novel like this. It's not chase scenes and descriptions of splattering blood. It's the slow, deliberate takeover of a town by vampires. In Salem's Lot, vampirism spreads through the town like a plague. The thought of neighbors sleeping under trailers or houses or garbage dumps, just waiting for the sun to go down is what was truly unnerving.

They Thirst is audacious to say the least. And McCammon uses some very clever ideas to move the story along. The scariest part is when the vampires just begin to move through apartment complexes and houses. Very chilling. But, the end of the novel is too much like a Hollywood action film. It seemed too 'deus ex machina' and just didn't fit in with the rest of the book.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Great reading value, Déc 20 2003
Par Iceguy "ice guy" (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
This review is from: They Thirst (Paperback)
What can one say about a book of epic proportions! It is a story well written and set in our modern times of vice, greed and the apathy concerning our fellow human beings.

It is a story of a boy, a vampire that has the teachings of Alexander the great, wit a master of other-worldy wispness, a jaded police officer with old world roots and stories, a crass group of bikers, LA gangs, priests, mediums, drug pushers and the roach - a simpleton pest exterminator that plays a pivotal role in defining the low point of the human condition.

Should be made into a classic movie!

I wish I could grant negative stars to this book. It is utter crap. I kept waiting in vain for the book to get good since it had some really nice reviews here. Read more
