The third volume in Graham's ( And One Wore Gray , which has 635,000 copies in print) saga of the Cameron clan focuses on sister Christa in post-Civil War Virginia. Desperately attempting to save her family home from Northerners exploiting their victory, Christa convinces Yankee Colonel Jeremy McCauley, her sister-in-law's brother, to marry her. When McCauley is posted West with the cavalry, Christa joins him, managing to continue to smell of roses even as she confronts tarantulas, buffalo stampedes and capture by Comanches. Her Southern pride battles her lust for the handsome Northerner she has married. Indeed, lust seems to be all that holds this couple together. Rough verbal and physical treatment of Christa seems de rigueur for Jeremy--unable to decide from moment to moment whether to display his passion via anger or seduction. Writes Christa in her journal: "He is fascinating to me, and I am compelled by him nearly as much as I am infuriated." The action unfolds fairly predictably until an 11th-hour twist makes this tale a bit more exciting and its ending less certain.

This was a great follow-up to One Wore Blue and One Wore Gray. Christa proves that she is every bit as smart, strong and determined as Daniel and Jesse. She shows a great strength in moving to the west and holds her head high with her courage and will to survive no matter the odds. Of course Jeremy shows a great deal of strength himself in dealing with Christa's headstrong attitude. Excellent book and of course great historical references as always.

This book constantly reminded me of "Gone with the Wind" only this one had great love scenes. I found myself skipping through the boring dialog just to get to the steamy romps in the hay.
Other than that, I would prefer to rent "Gone With The Wind" instead of reading this book again.

This is the story of Jesse and Daniels little sister Christa. This story picks up at the end of the war. Christa is a true southern belle and has survived the indignites and the defeat of her south. When marrigae to a Yankee Officer is the only way to save her families plantations she does not hesitate. Colonel Jeremy McCatuley is the lucky fellow and he has plans to make Christa see the benefit of a complete union between the two.

With her new husband Christa moves west with the calvery. Sights that she can only imagine now become fact. She sees Indians, and stampeding buffalo. This hard existance only brings Christa and Jeremy together. This was my favorite of the three stories. A must read.

I first found Graham's work in One Wore Blue and I loved it. This is the best of the series of three.
