Beaufort offers another entertaining adventure featuring medieval knight Sir Geoffrey Mappestone and his sidekick, Roger of Durham. It's 1102 and King Henry's crown rests uneasily on his head. Plans to unseat the king and replace him with his brother, the Duke of Normandy, abound. One of the nobles who sides with the duke is the Black Earl, Roger de Belleme, who has been summoned to Henry's court to answer for his disloyalty. Geoffrey and Roger are also on their way to see Henry, and wherever the pair goes, adventure follows. This time they witness the gruesome murders of de Belleme's cousin and a priest who purportedly carries a vital message to the king. Before long, Geoffrey and Roger are caught up in solving the murders, which appear to be linked to both the plot against Henry and a terrible weapon called Greek Fire. A fine plot, unexpected twists, engaging characters, a liberal sprinkling of humor, and plenty of rousing escapades make this an excellent choice for historical mystery fans.
