When everyone is settled into their homes on a brand new cul-de-sac, the disparate neighbors decide to have a get-acquainted party. All seems to go well despite vast differences. Fun is had by all until the host is found dead in his yard. Skeletons suddenly begin falling out of the new closets, and EVERYONE becomes a suspect. Narrator Gareth Armstrong is splendid at giving Gregson's fine description and dialogue a perfect portrayal. Accents, wordplay, irony, and humor add to the pleasure. A moving subplot is depicted as Inspector Hook and his wife face their young son's grave illness. The outstanding Lambert and Hook series will be enjoyed by mystery and non-mystery fans both. From Booklist
The residents of Gurney Close have nothing in common except that they have all recently moved into the new development. When resident Rosemary Lennox proposes that they get to know each other better at a street party, everyone agrees it's a good idea. The party is a success, but the next morning, Robin Durkin, who hosted the event, is found strangled to death. Detectives Hook and Lambert, out of the good cop-bad cop school, are called in to investigate. An efficiently written, solidly plotted British procedural that delivers what fans of the genre want.
