From Booklist
Charlotte Wyndham is horrified to discover her father at the point of suicide, his substantial gambling losses having ruined him. Charlotte convinces him to go to prison, but both he and her mother die shortly after his release, leaving Charlotte penniless. Fortunately, her friend Verity Conniston offers Charlotte a permanent home at the Conniston country estate. But even in the midst of her relief at this fortuitous turn of events, Charlotte learns that Verity has just miscarried. Her doctor has warned her not to become pregnant again, thus thwarting Verity's chances of producing an heir for her husband, Guy. To repay Verity's generosity, Charlotte hatches the bizarre plan of carrying a child fathered by Guy, which the couple will pass off as their own. But Charlotte has also fallen in love with Guy's brother, Ket, a certain prescription for disaster. While the plot strains credulity in places, Lorrimer ties it up nicely. Readers of English historical romances will find the characters engaging and the period touches convincing.
