4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for everybody, Aug 11 2007
By Lana (Universe, Earth) - See all my reviews
Think the author of this book is very known guy and he makes really cool stuff. And writes much books.

Don't know if he thinks about all this "tips and tricks" himself, but for sure he have fantasy and imagination. Think it's very important for every designer. Think book "Adobe Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks" will help many people to find inspiration in what they wanna do, doing.. or if they don't know from where to begin.

In book you can find a lot of cool and good tricks. Some of them of cause just using some filters, other made with fantasy, third taken from some magazines, but book in common is really great.

Now it's almost published his new book "Photoshop CS3 Down and Dirty Tricks" It it will be as good as this one, i definitely wanna have it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best ever, May 9 2005
By Adaera (Vancouver) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This without a doubt has got to be one of the best, if not THE best PhotoShop CS "how to" book I have read to date. While I trust any book written by Scott Kelby to be top notch, this one surpassed expectations. Mr. Kelby's style makes it very easy for anyone at any level of PhotoShop experience to learn his new "dirty tricks". Not only are the effects he teaches in this book very timely for the graphics world, each lesson contains methods that can be applied in a wide variety of ways, not only in the manner he has applied them. The sidebar tips on every page are alone worth the price of this book. I have great respect for Mr. Kelby's work and like him, encourage PhotoShop users to take what they've learned and mess with it. The screenshots he uses in his book are very clear, the lessons are easy to follow and like many tutorial sites or other books, he doesn't write with the assumption that everyone is an experienced PhotoShop user-he takes the time to explain every step so even the absolute beginner can follow the tutorials in the book. The fact that the reader can also access the book's images online adds to its "user friendly" interface. The resources Mr. Kelby includes at the end of the book are a goldmine for further learning. I would definitely put this book on the list of "PhotoShop must-haves."

2.0 out of 5 stars The Camel's Back is Broken...., Jun 28 2004
I'm very disappointed. This will be the last Photoshop book I ever buy. The only good tutorials in the book are: the Grunge Tutorial, and the 2 that Felix Nelson did, which were the Neon Text and Reverse Restoration. The rest is just stealing other people's ideas and brand identity. And that's just pointless, is it not? And the cheap "stolen-knockoffs" that Kelby creates look terrible, hence cheap stolen-knockoffs :)

My suggestion is that if you're a beginner that has never heard of Kelby, go ahead and indulge. But if you have read 1 of his other books don't get this. However, if you go against my advice and do buy it and like it, chances are you still think unadulterated Bevel & Emboss and soft-vignettes are cool. Lastly, if you're like me, just go to the bookstore and glance through it, because that's all its worth.

I've had it with this bloated bunch of copycat-cookbook-knockoff-crap. Truth be told, I didn't want to say crap. I wanted to use a stronger word with same number of letters.
