From Publishers Weekly

Graham (Rebel; Captive) sets her latest McKenzie family saga in Civil War-era Florida, a refreshing, unique backdrop for that bloody struggle. Most of the action takes place at sea, where swashbuckling rebel captain Jerome McKenzie, skipper of the Lady Varina (after Jefferson Davis's wife), is big, bold, and has Seminole blood running in his veins. Beautiful, bold Risa Magee, a Union general's daughter who nurses the wounded, is his nemesis. Mutual hatred turns into turbulent love?but not before multiple misunderstandings threaten to tear the fragile relationship apart. It's a classic formula historical romance, but Graham does it better than anyone. Assured narratives, deft characterizations and fast-moving plots are givens. But this is also a classic bodice-ripper with chemises, bodices, pantalets and other delicate flimsies strewn throughout. It's not to everyone's taste, but Graham does it well.

Ingram

They are an unlikely pair brought together by fate amid the drama and violence of the American Civil War. Although she is the daughter of a Yankee colonel and he a staunch defender of the Confederate cause, it is through their passion that they manage to overcome their war-time political difference and find in each other the love of a lifetime! "Surrender" is the sequel to "Captive". Ads in "Romantic Times". (Fiction--Romance) . --Ce texte provient d'une édition qui n'est plus publiée ou qui est non diponible.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Loved it!, Aoû 2 2003

This review is from: Surrender (Paperback)
I've read this book--as well as the rest of the McKenzie saga--about four times now. Surrender is the next perfect continuation of the story. I love how Graham doesn't forget her previous characters and weaves them into each story she writes. I fell in love with Ian in Rebel, but fell more in love with Jerome. His fire and passion burn right through the pages.

I think the story could have been better had there been more interaction between Risa and Jerome. It seems they spend more time apart than they do together. And the times they do spend together, they are working against each other rather than making amends.

All in all, however, this is a wonderful story and quite a page turner.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Unlikable Main Characters, Mars 7 2002
This review is from: Surrender (Paperback)
The "connection" between the hero and heroine of this book is disconcerting. Though their sexual encounters are told to be sizzling, all other behavior towards each other is consistently disrespectful and often intentionally hurtful. The author spends a considerable amount of time trying to convince the reader that Jerome and Risa are compassionate human beings, but they never display ANY kindness or tenderness towards each other. This is not my kind of love story.

2.0étoiles sur 5 too many repetitions, Fév 11 2002
Par Un client
This review is from: Surrender (Paperback)
This book has a nice begining (about 30 first pages out of about 300). What happens afterwards, seems a movement on a spiral. With a refren "you are a rebel; no, you are a rebel", all the sexual encounters of the heros consistenly occur in the same setting: close to water (ocean, lake - whatever). Plus several rather predictable splits and reconciliations. All in all it becomes a rather boring read. The historical setting is rather fresh (Florida, Civil War), however, it is described rather vaguely and not very believable.
