From Amazon.com

Miami crime reporter Britt Montero, the Cuban American with Latin passion and Yankee perseverance, gets involved with members of the Cold Case task force that's reopened an old case involving the murder of a high school senior and the rape and near-death of his girlfriend, who's now a sculptor with an unusual specialty--ice carving. Unmasking the killers requires Sunny Hartley's cooperation, but even Britt's blandishments can't convince her to help the task force bring her attackers and her boyfriend's murderers to justice. And it doesn't help any that the head of the force, who has her own reasons for pulling her men off the investigation, seems to have something romantic going with homicide cop Kendall MacDonald, Britt's old (but hardly forgotten) lover. As usual, Edna Buchanan delivers a denouement that's full of bittersweet tricks and turns in this latest outing for her popular series heroine. --Jane Adams --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Buchanan's alter ego, Miami crime reporter Britt Montero, returns as the protagonist of an eighth fast-paced detective thriller (after You Only Die Twice). The Miami police's cold case squad (which investigates long-unsolved crimes) catches a break when an electrocuted burglar proves to be a vital link in solving a 14-year-old murder. Two affluent teenagers on their first date were abducted, assaulted, shot and left for dead. Despite a massive reward and a multi-state manhunt, the police were never able to find the attackers. The girl, Sunny, survived and has become a reclusive sculptress unwilling to revisit the past. But the reopening of the case attracts the attention of some who are willing to kill again, and Sunny finds herself pulled back in. As always, Buchanan packs her tale with fascinating secondary story lines, including a baby trapped in a well, a friend involved in domestic violence and Britt's on-again/off-again romance with detective Kendall McDonald. The somber shadow of September 11 hangs in the air throughout (Britt is plagued by nightmares; McDonald volunteers at Ground Zero). In addition to clever plotting, Buchanan's strong suit is once again her empathy: she always focuses on the devastated family and friends who survive each murder victim. Few will guess the final triple-twist ending of this exceptionally dark and moving entry in a series that never fails to please.achievement in journalism-in addition to an earlier Pulitzer Prize for crime reporting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life Isn't Fair, Feb 23 2004
By A Customer
The wrong people die in this book. Good people suffer. Bad people prosper. And it all happens in the aftermath of 9/11. THE ICE MAIDEN is about surviving, about getting past life's monumental injustices and taking the good that's left. The mystery itself -- what happened to beautiful young Sunny Hartley and her boyfriend Ricky in that field on Christmas Eve so many years ago -- is brutal and sad and includes a shocking plot twist. This installment in the Britt Montero series expands our heroine's love life and work relationships in very credible, very moving ways. I recommend this for those who want a book that's about more than the crime that's a catalyst for the storytelling.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Her Best, Jan 10 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ice Maiden (Hardcover)
If the author was going to go down the path she chose to end the story, I wish it hadn't seemed so haphazard and rushed. When the case was wrapped up and Britt was packing for her trip, there were still enough pages left to know that something was going to happen, but few enough pages to know it was going to be weak. I'm not a fan of this type of plot device because I don't like feeling "forced" to buy someone's next book -- if I like their work I will anyway.

Other than that, while not her best, I thought this installment in the Britt Montero series was very good, and I would've given it 4 stars on its own.

1.0 out of 5 stars I Read A Different Book: The Ice Maiden by Edna Buchanan, Dec 13 2003
By Kevin Tipple (Plano, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ice Maiden (Hardcover)
There are some books that are fairly good in a mystery sense even though once again the author is overall depressing in tone and subject matter. Then every now and then, there is a book that has such a twist at the end; the book becomes a horrible book. When a major character over a number of novels is killed off needlessly just when things were going better as another reminder how capricious life is. Considering the fact that Edna Buchanan's books always have frequent references to the capriciousness of life, this is one story telling idea she should have discarded. This book has a simply horrible ending and there is no other way to put it.

As the book opens, a repeat offender has been electrocuted while attempting to drop through the ceiling of a Cuban owned store. The storeowner for years had tried to get help from the Miami Police force, but with little success. So, he wired his ceiling intending to give the burglar a small shock and send him on his way. Instead, the man was electrocuted and has to be extricated by Fire Rescue before he takes a trip to the morgue. Soon the District Attorney's office decides to prosecute the storeowner for murder during an election year despite the fact that the dead man has a long history of crime.

In fact, his body provides a major clue that leads to a case from over fourteen years ago at Christmas when two teenagers were attacked and left for dead. While Ricky died, Sunny was beaten, raped and shot in head and somehow survived. The case created an intense wave of publicity years ago and while a massive manhunt was undertaken, no one was ever identified or charged in the case. The ripples of that night have ruined so many lives and still haunt the survivors because murder affects everyone who knew the deceased person.

The dead burglar is quickly identified and soon it becomes apparent that he was involved in the horrific events so long ago. There are others involved and they have their suspicions as to who they are, but thanks to politics, the Cold Case Squad can't actively investigate. But Sergeant Burch convinces Brit Montero to help work the case with them while ostensibly covering the squad for a profile section of the paper. She of course agrees and soon the nightmare of the past is given new life today.

With frequent references to the terrorist attacks and their aftermath, as well as other novels of the series that had their own pain and suffering, this read is a mostly depressing book. That coupled with an absolute horrible ending for long time fans and readers of the series make this book simply one to ignore in the store.

I think I should start off and say that I am not a "mystery reader" as such. I don't follow a particular series and this is the only mystery I have read by Edna Buchanan. Read more
