Christopher Evan Welch kicks and scores with his engaging narration of Grisham's charming tale of touchdowns and tortellini. Rick Dockery, a 28-year-old third-string NFL quarterback, is playing for the Cleveland Browns. In the final minutes of a decisive game, Rick is brought off the bench to disastrous results. The Browns lose the game and a chance at going to the Super Bowl. After he is unceremoniously dumped by the team, the quarterback agrees to play for a small but tenacious team called the Parma Panthers—whose playing field is in Parma, Italy. Welch perfectly captures the tone for this humorous and often touching fish-out-of-water story. Welch brings the listener along with Rick, as the young quarterback painfully adjusts to the strange new world he's thrust into. He brings to life Rick's discovery of Italy, with all its history and colorful characters. Especially delicious are the descriptions of the rich Italian foods that Rick and his teammates seem to constantly consume. By the end of the book, listeners will be seeking out the nearest Italian trattoria.

In the northern Italian football league, theres at least one Yank on each of the eight teams. He gets paid. Everyone else is PLAYING FOR PIZZA. NFL veteran Rick Dockery is the quarterback for the Parma Panthers. After single-handedly destroying the Cleveland Browns chance to win an AFC title, he was fired and run out of the NFL. Playing in Parma is his only option. Christopher Evan Welchs evenhanded delivery is just right for a novel thats part football story and part travel guide. His voice is clear, crisp, and well paced in presenting the wide assortment of teammates and other Parma residents. Playing for Pizza is pure entertainment but probably best suited for football fans. In order to pursue his pro career, third-string quaterback Rick Dockery (recently fired by the Cleveland Browns) chooses to play with the Parma Panthers of the Italian Football League. In fact he has very little other choice as he is more or less ban from pro football in North America. Italy will be an eye-opener for him.

This is a feel-good novel  something of a departure for Grisham. A sort of romantic comedy about american football Italy. An odd mix to say the least, and, surprisingly, one that works. It is light- and warmhearted, laced with sun, good food, and great sceneries. There is a romantic naiveté in almost each Grisham's main characters, and Dockery doesn't break that simple rule. As I said, this is an odd mix and it does make for an odd book, in the sense that I am not sure if readers of romance will love the football part of it and if football fans will love the romance part.

I liked it tremendously (loving both football and Grisham). The story is fairly predictable and contains no real surprise whatsoever. There is a love interest, a bunch of warm and sympathetic characters, and one villain who will almost be won over by the end. Recommended light reading.

I feet that I have waisted my time reading this book. I hoped for a story until half of it than realized that there will be no story and that it is quite boring. I am not sure what John Grisham tried to accomplish with this novel?! Don't waist your money and time on this non novel novel.

If you enjoyed A Year in Provence and you love North American football this book will delight you. It is a fun, light story that takes you on a tour of Italy while talking football careers, plays and strategy. All of us who played the game for pride only love the Parma Panthers of the Italian NFL.

This entertaining adventure written with the story-telling talent of John Grisham is a little gem. It kept me smiling from the first to the last page. It will make a great date movie, a perfect chick flick where the guys won't be bored.
