Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Drawing on 25 years of experience as a vegetarian, mother and osteopathic obstetrician-gynecologist, Roberts strikes an inspirational tone in this handbook, offering practical and spiritual advice to women wondering about the safety of a vegetarian diet during pregnancy. There's nothing to worry about, writes Roberts, who offers nutritional guidance that will, for example, provide a vitamin B1 intake "superior to meat-eaters." She addresses everything from protein requirements to labor pains and nursing positions, with a zeal for the vegetarian diet that can seem almost religious. Roberts weaves spirituality throughout, with poems at the beginning of each chapter and numerous references to "maternal intuition" and "wisdom from a higher source." The volume's question-and-answer format grows a trifle tedious, although a detailed index makes specific information easier to find. Roberts dedicates her useful book to " every woman contemplating pregnancy while striving for the best of health and showing the greatest mercy to others," but readers who aren't already dedicated to vegetarianism and a spiritual approach to wellness may be put off by its sometimes preachy tone.

Review

Christiane Northrup, M.D.author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom Dr. Holly Roberts has done us all a magnificent service by sharing a lifetime of expertise, information, and wisdom to help vegetarian women achieve healthy pregnancies.

Neal D. Barnard, M.D.author of Food for Life Dr. Roberts cuts through the myths and worries, demystifying the changes that occur during pregnancy and giving readers the confidence that comes from having the answers they need. I recommend it highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful reference book, Oct 28 2009
By NC (boston) - See all my reviews
For all of those ladies out there concerned that their vegetarian lifestyle will be a problem during pregnancy, this book will set them at ease. I found this book to be a useful reference guide and found it helpful that they listed sources of nutrients by food type (i.e. calcium, iron, etc.) Whenever I encountered a skeptic that I could be healthy, and carry a healthy child, while living as a vegetarian, I was able to use this book as proof. But even more important, I'm now mother to 2 healthy little girls and I remain healthy myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars She really, really means well, but..., Feb 20 2004
The title just doesn't quite represent the book. It is a very nice book about generally staying healthy during pregnancy, or exploring the idea of vegetarianism, but as a lifelong vegetarian looking for some real in-depth information, I was disappointed. It's very beginner-level.
One glaring omission: absolutely no mention of Dr. Tom Brewer, or his dietary recommendations/discoveries! Not even in her section on toxemia/preeclampsia! There's a quick mention of the theory that calcium may help prevent these problems, but no mention at all of the incredible success of Dr.Brewer's advice: Lots of protein, plenty of water, and salt-to-taste. (and, of course, plenty of veggies and whole grains...) Check out blueribbonbaby.org.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for Dr. Roberts!!!!, Feb 3 2004
By A Customer
I used Your Vegetarian Pregnancy during my pregnancy and found it to be extremely helpful - for both myself and my healthy newborn vegetarian son, Josh!!! As Dr. Roberts seemed to have written this book as an experienced compassionate physician who was also a vegetarian and a mother, she seemed to know exactly the questions I would be concerned about. She also knew of straightforward ways I would be able to deal with all of them and still keep being vegetarian. I greatly appreciated her description of pregnancy's month-by-month changes and all those specific nutritional needs I would face as a vegetarian during my pregnancy. I felt so secure and reassured knowing I was able to fulfill all American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists nutritional guidelines during my vegetarian pregnancy simply by understanding and following her guidelines. I especially appreciated her explaining how I could combat morning-sickness, hypoglycemia, too much weigh gain, and anemia as a vegetarian. They all worked!!! Thank goodness my son and I were able to benefit from this book just in time for my pregnancy.
