I generally like historically based novels and, having seen many programs on television of archaeological digs in Mexico, and indeed having visited one of the pyramid sites, I was excited to find this book and started to read it with eager anticipation.
But not far into the book that excitement changed to dissatisfaction with a writing style more suited to a modern who-done-it, frustration with a plot that grew ever more unnecessarily complicated, questionable phraseology, and character names like Kindly, Constant, and Lion which seemed altogether out of place. After all, why would Yaotl's brother Lion, one of the main characters in the book, be called Lion when lions were unknown in the Americas at the supposed time of this narrative! I could not develop any sympathy with Yaotl, and found myself wishing he would just die after any one of the many beatings he managed to survive.
And the ending, well, that too was entirely unsatisfying and not worth the read to get to it.
My only consolation was that I paid a sale price for the book, but still regret my time investment. You too can pass this one up.
