Oprah's longtime personal trainer expands his "Get with the Program" product line with this calm, supportive guide to healthy eating. Greene reaffirms the tenets of last year's Get With the Program!: Getting Real About Your Weight, Health, and Emotional Well-Being-stay hydrated, exercise aerobically, strength-train and eliminate "emotional eating"-before turning his attention to good food habits. Eating breakfast is essential, he says, as is establishing a cutoff time at night (try not to eat 3 hours before sleep); numerous small meals and smart food choices round out his four main steps to healthy eating. Greene's recipes, which take up the latter half of the book, are easy and pleasing: Broccoli and Swiss Chard Cannelloni is full of the beta carotene he espouses in an earlier chapter, and Buttermilk Blueberry Pancakes provide "a healthy shot of antioxidants." He also presents deceptively healthy recipes for Paella, Wild Mushroom Grits and a delicious Eggplant and Zucchini Poor Boy Sandwich. Working long hours in a kitchen can be hard on my system; sometimes I seem to have no time to exercise , constantly eating things that make me feel unwell, or guilty; inevitably this leads to one of my 'health kicks' - I exercise steadily and paying strict attention to my diet.

When Bob Green became famous as Oprah Winfrey's trainer and exercise physiologist, I picked up a cheap used copy of this book on Amazon. As both a food book or a self-help book it doesn't offer anything particularly new or interesting - "Eat sensibly and exercise" is his message. Gee, really?

It is a simple book, with simple recipes and basic food wisdom. It didn't really teach me anything, just helped me stay focused for a while on my own commitment to a better diet and regular exercise, which isn't a bad thing.

Get with the program, indeed! I AM a health freak! And I do care about my looks. Bob's book provides a lot of good, useful information that make a lot of sense to me. In my opinion, the only author that can compete with Mr. Green is Dr. Tombak, the author of some European bestsellers, best known in North America for his longevity book titled Live 150 Years that is also sold on Amazon. Tombak focuses more on a healthy life style in general, rather then on just losing weight. Therefore he does not offer so many food recipes as Mr. Green, but he does additionally offer numerous herbal solutions to various ailments. He also has a special chapter on juicing. Both authors give good advice not only WHAT to eat, but also HOW and WHEN to eat. Tombak gives a lot of emphasis on everything being as close to nature as possible. For example, he suggests what kind of foods we are supposed to eat at a particular season to be in agreement with nature's cycles... He is a great believer in biological rhythms. Both authors suggest balance, moderation, and variety; both authors suggest drinking a lot of water, not eating before going to bed, or while watching TV (a typical couch potato habit), and so on, etc. These two books are very different, but at the same time they have so much in common. I strongly recommend getting both of them!

I have seen Bob Greene on Oprah and he is so down-to-earth. His ideas and guidelines for eating healthfullly are easy to incorporate and just make good sense. The book is an easy, interesting read and his advice is practical and simple to undertake. Now my entire family is eating healthier and is slimming down to boot! I appreciate that Bob doesn't go overboard in expecting us to give up everything that tastes good. He understands that we still need to indulge ourselves once in a while. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to change their eating habits for good.
