Product Description

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-Short stories featuring the Vampire Slayer in different times and places, framed by two tales of the most recent incarnation, the valiant and irreverent Buffy Summers of Sunnydale, CA. If Buffy finds it difficult to carry out her mission, it is even more of a challenge to lead the double life of a Slayer within the conventions of court life in Japan in the year 980, in a small village in Brittany in 1320, or on a pirate ship in the Caribbean in 1661. Other stories take place in London, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta. These "heroic girls" sometimes doubly defy convention, as when the pirate and the Civil War soldier pass as men, or the villager falls in love with her Watcher and has a forbidden baby. In one deceptively simple tale of North versus South set in flapper times, the Slayer takes a narrative backseat to an unbeatable vamp of a human sort. Some of the authors, such as Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Kara Dalkey, will be familiar to fantasy readers; those writing of present-day Sunnydale worked on this series and bring dialogue and characters vividly to life; all offer intriguing, authentic-feeling, and mostly well-crafted takes on the Slayer legend. While Buffy's appeal to teens is obvious, enterprising teachers might also find some of these tales useful in sparking the imaginations of reluctant readers or history students.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1 of the best Buffy books, Dec 11 2003
By "mysticbuffy" (, WV United States) - See all my reviews
This is 1 of my favorite books ever, 1 f my favorite story lines was Blood and Brine I loved the pirate slayer. My favorite story in this book was the last 1 where Buffy, Willow, and Xander go back in time I loved the fact that Buffy got to see her mom again and that she wasn't stuck with Dawn for once. I think that when the show brought Dawn on the show and killed Buffy's mom is when they ruint Buffy, from the 5th season on the show slowly went downhill. I HIGHLY recommend this book it is definitely the best Buffy book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this Book.........., Sep 8 2003
I've always love BTVS because of the Mythology of the Slayer line and how she's Chosen and all of that, I also love the characters and how they're written so well.....But i've often wondered about Past Slayers, what they were like, and what their life was like because as we've always known, Buffy is just one of many Slayers throughout the Years. I loved this Book and how it told about Different Slayers from Different Era's and how that particular Era effected their Duty as the Slayer.
I've seen other Reviews where people ask what good a 'Pirate' Slayer would be and if you really think about it, all of the Vampires that Migrate from country too country more than likely use Ships too Travel in because of the Dark Rooms beneath the Surface, she could stop that from happening.
My Favorite story in this book was probably "Stake out on Rush Street", among a few other's....I also liked the one about the Civil War Slayer and the one about the Slayer who fought Dracula........
I thought it was a very good book and I recommend it to other fans of Buffy and especially Fans of the Buffy Books.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book was okay, but should have been better, Jul 4 2003
By James Harrell - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was okay, it definitely had it's high and low points. I feel as though all together, a good read. Though, the first volume is much better than the second.

"All That You Do Comes Back Unto Thee" - The first story in this book tells a story about Buffy. It's written by Todd A. McIntosh, and it's about a gay boy who dabbles in magics he can't control, and awakens an ancient mummy. Also the ending was practically just like the episode where Xander's girlfriend was a mummy. Not a very good concept, and executed very poorly.

"Lady Shobu" - This book, did have a very good concept, but I felt as though the demons in this story weren't very scary. I mean posessed turtles, not really that scary! Kara Dalkey did her best though, and it is not the worst story in the collection.

"Abomination" - A truly great story. I would definitely classify this as one of the best. It is interesting to wonder what would happen to a Slayer who had children. This story definitely answers that question. It is the tale is of a "wannabe" Slayer who falls in love with her Watcher. They get married and have children and is then called to be the Slayer. The Council finds out about this and changes the new slayer's watcher. She refuses to fight, and leaves the town in a bit of a pickle. Great story, and great ending.

"Blood and Brine" - This story, was okay, but not much better. I mean how many vampires can a sea captain kill on a ship? Not too many. Plus, the ending seemed a bit too much. But, the story was well written, even if the concept was poor.

"The Ghosts of Slayers Past" - This story, is really stupid. It's a retelling of A Christmas Carol. The Watcher is a biggot, and totally revolting. Buffy, is in the end, but her dialogue is not very Buffy-ish.

"The New Watcher" - Not a good story....let's leave it at that.

"House of the Vampire" - The story, is okay, but the ending wasn't quite plausible. I mean,it just didn't seem to work with me!

"The War Between the States" - The title doesn't really work, but not all together a bad story. It was told from an outsider, and not the slayer. Also it was set in a very interesting. The flappers really were inspiring....even the ones who were slayers.

"Stakeout on Rush Street" - This is a great story, filled with actually lingo from the age. Truly a remarkable story, and would be enjoyed by even non-Buffy fans.

"Again" - And now we come to the end, and it's no surprise they saved the best for last. In this adventure, Buffy and the Scoobies go back in time to their old bodies, but with their current minds. The BEST stor in the entire book. Truly an amazing idea.
