From Publishers Weekly

Humanity's war against the nasty alien Posleens continues in military SF author Ringo's latest entry in his popular Legacy of the Aldenata series (after 2002's When the Devil Dances), but the unambivalent, almost innocent joie de combat of the earlier, pre-9/11 books is missing here. Having learned to combine human strategy with superior (although captured) technology, a Posleen overlord threatens to break through into unoccupied human territory. Opposing this effort are Major Mike O'Neal and his battalion of armored combat suits, plus conventional armor units lead by a Brobdingnagian mobile gun with a razor-wielding cartoon rabbit emblazoned on its side. The battle scenes are as vivid as ever, but the consequences lie more heavily than before on the warriors, as when O'Neal approves a nuclear strike near where his remaining family are located in order to save his command. It becomes increasingly clear that some alien "allies" would prefer that the humans and Posleens destroy one another and leave the galactic status quo undisturbed. Attentive readers may notice some overlap with When the Devil Dances, which Ringo explains in an afterword. Despite the overall dark tone, the author's trademark gallows humor shines through ("This is what you get for letting rednecks play with antimatter, boss"). So does a bit of hope: Ringo concludes his afterword by asserting "the good guys always win in the end."

From Booklist

The fourth and final novel (for the moment, at least) about Earth versus the Posleen--the same kind of glorious jumble of a book as A Hymn before Battle (2000), Gust Front (2001), and When the Devil Dances [BKL Ap 15 02] each was--brings the war for human survival to a thundering climax. Cally O'Neal and her father, Mike O'Neal, are armed and dangerous in the forefront of the action, along with a right good crew of relatives and friends. The supertank Bun- Bun and its crew also hammer their way through the Posleen, and are hammered in return. They are ably supported by voluptuous MI Major LeBlanc, now a tank battalion commander, and the superweapons created by Dr. Miguel Castanuelo; ably opposed by the Posleen, whose smarts and courage ensure real suspense right up to a slightly deus-ex-machina conclusion. Ringo most probably plans to resolve the human conflict with the Posleen's secret puppet masters, so, as before, enjoy in the expectation of more to come. Roland Green

5.0étoiles sur 5 Pick..pick..pick...., Jui 4 2004

Authors used to be able to write one book of about 200 paper back pages and no one complained. Now, the chief complaint is that this book is too short. Does it occur to anyone that if you liked the book so much that you complain it was too short then you probably shouldn't be complaining? John, write another one, Bean can charge double, and I'll buy it.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Meh, Avril 15 2004

I start off with the fact that I was disappointed by the end the most. So, be forewarned about the ensuing spoilers...

The biggest complaint I have is the deus ex machina saviors, the Fleet. After all, they appeared, and the story ended a few paragraphs later, excluding the afterward. What have they been up to? What did they have to go through to get there? What about the action getting planet-side? Why did it take so long? Has anything else been happening in the universe? What about the rest of the planet; how did humanity fair?

It was hinted in the author's note that some grand-scheme questions might be followed in an additional series, but that is a long time off. What started off as a story involving the country as a whole pretty much ended up with an over-sized tank, its crew, and one seemingly indestructible guy in a mech suit. Others were thrown in, but it was hard to keep track because they rated low in importance to the main thrust of the story and therefore never stood out.

I don't want to be too snippy, but everything seemed to end very abruptly, with little closure or broad explanation. Perhaps I enjoy fleet maneuvers over infantry action with larger political and spatial arenas, but there was much more to detail that was left undone. Overall, series is just alright, but nothing that I would rate higher than three stars.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Great read, Fév 18 2004

This is a very good book, but not one that stands alone. If you like David Drake, you will LOVE Ringo, but don't start with this book first. This book is an excellent ending to When the Devil Dances, but start at the beginning with A Hynm Before Dying. Four books in the series so far, and no immediate plans for more (but there had better be!!)so it is an excellent series to read. Not many really good military SF writers out there, and fewer that really served, so when one comes along, I always try to read them. Sorry I waited so long to start reading Mr. Ringo. My advice is to read ALL his books. They are worth the time.

As to this book, not a good stand alone book, but he TOLD us it wouldn't be. Kind of leaves a lot of loose ends, but then when you have a galatic war, how do you wrap it up in four books? Still, would have liked more ACS in this, and less Bun Bun. And I was an airborne tanker (3/73 Armor) so I know asking for less Bun Bun is making me sound like a heretic, but from my viewpoint the books ARE about ACS(and O'Neal). WTDD had a lot of Bun Bun, so I was very much looking forward to a LOT of ACS in this last book, and just finish the Bun Bun storyline. Maybe some more charactor development of minor charactors in O'Neals company, and more combat. Of course, I freely admit I'm really spoiled, and with writers like Drake and Ringo, I plan to stay spoiled. Overall, I loved the book (read it in a day because I HAD to see what happened), and thought it brought THIS trilogy to a nice conclusion, but it made me want a new series RIGHT NOW. Hopefully next year will bring a new one. Hint Hint
