From Publishers Weekly

This sequel to the wildly successful Sir Apropos of Nothing (2001) starts off with a bawdy send-up of Lord of the Rings, but quickly segues into its own territory with the appearance of a mysterious Visionary at Apropos's bar, Bugger Hall. The man tells our antihero, You will become a shadow of your former self while escaping to the "Tragic Waste on the Road to Ruin" (or is that "Woad to Wuin"?), just as Sharee, Apropos's weaver companion from the first volume, bursts in and begs for his help in escaping Lord Beliquose. The very loud lord wants a powerful gem, the Eye of the Beholder, which the virtually powerless Sharee possesses and which Apropos promptly steals during their escape into the dominion of the Rockmunchers beneath Bugger Hall. Unfortunately, the gem enchants Apropos during their subsequent arrival at the Tragic Waste and turns him into Peacelord of Wuin, a barbarian who wears blue "woad" on his face before battle and has, as his consort, the beautiful but possibly quite wicked Lady Kate. When Apropos shakes off his amnesia, he resolves to reverse his fate, and that of Sharee's in a world turned upside down by violence. He also hopes to avenge his mothers death. The wisecracking wordplay that fans have come to expect skips smoothly off the page, lifting this satirical fantasy into a class all its own. Juggling goofy entertainment with gritty philosophical musing, David should build plenty of momentum for the promised third act, Tong Lashing.

From Library Journal

After his last adventure resulted in the destruction of a magical artifact, Sir Apropos settles down for a peaceful life as a tavern-keeper. When a wandering Visionary makes a prediction that launches the reluctant hero on another quest that leaves him stranded and dying in the middle of a desert, Sir "Poe" awakens to find himself the leader of a mighty and ruthless warband bent on the conquest of the world. Continuing the tale begun in Sir Apropos of Nothing, David takes another poke at the conventions of epic fantasy, this time targeting the epic heroes of sword and sorcery. In between large doses of bawdy humor and outrageous puns, the author spins an engaging tale of high fantasy featuring an appealing hero. For most fantasy collections.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Can't put the series down, Mai 17 2004
I've searched for a novel that would catch my interested, and then keep my interest-this series does it for me. It only took me a couple of weeks to finish Book One and the second was no different.

Apropos is one of the most unlikely heros one will ever see in a novel. He's selfish and cowardly yet his own battle between his conscience and his heart show he can be a hero if he wanted to be.

The book begins where the last left off and goes directly into a quick and concise spoof of Lord of the Rings where Apropos finds the ring which "rules them all." After battling that he comes back to face his companion Sharee and to hopefully explain what happened but he finds out that she is attempting to strike him with lightening, being a weather weaver. His quest goes on and he settles nicely in Bugger Hall. That all ends when a Visionary (one who can see the future) comes in to tell him that his life will change very soon and someone would ask for his help. As the story goes on he is stuck once again, lost everything he owned, and is onthe run from a gargantuan man who is after something his friend stole. On the verge of death in the Tragic Waste he dies and then opens his eyes to realize something is very wrong. He is not dead and has just slain someone who had would naturally ran from in a heart beat. He has become everything he feared and has no clue how it happened.

As the mystery of what happened to him while he was unconscious unravels the story begins to deepen and conspiracy is just a page away.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Wish there were a "No Stars" option, Avril 20 2004
This was horrible. From the dust jacket, it sounds like an incredibly good book. Truly, it is the hero of the piece that is the downfall of this novel - he is completely unsympathetic & unlikable. The plotting is a bit irregular & the pacing is too drawn out as well. This book was an utter disappointment.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Interesting But Flawed, Déc 21 2003
Par Rodney Meek (Austin, TX) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
This is the second volume of the adventures of the craven misanthrope known as Apropos of Nothing. It starts off as a rather unfortunate spoof of The Lord of the Rings, in which our so-called hero accidentally comes into the possession of a most unusual ring inscribed "One thing to rule them all", which gives him...well, let's say additional girth and length, not to mention stamina and irresistible animal magnetism. However, this situation is quickly resolved and it's not too long before Apropos is reluctantly launched upon another quest altogether.

It's a sturdy enough tale, but David continues to suffer from the problem of trying to yoke together his idiotic puns with epic grandeur and tragedy. Moreover, he essentially writes two characters: the snarky, amoral, and cowardly anti-hero who flouts all the rules and conventions of his blighted society, and the chowder-headed and brutal muscle-bound thugs that seek to oppress the protagonist. Basically, it seems pretty clear that David was frequently thrashed in high school, and this has shaped his worldview. The strong are morons who delight in violence, so if the weak are to survive, they have to be filled with hate and contempt towards all and be ready to bail out at a moment's notice.

David's material is actually pretty good. Even though he and his POV characters rail against the inequities of society and the futility of doing good, they do harbor hearts of gold and end up doing the allegedly right thing despite themselves. And like Weezer (or was it some other band?), he is trying to break your heart. He has a knack for abruptly interrupting his comedy hijinks with sudden wrenching horror or sorrow. (Not to mention that each of his novels features A Dark Secret, wherein one major character will reveal a hidden and wretched chapter from his or her past to explain why they can never again laugh or cry or trust anyone.) Some day, though, David will have to step it up and bust out of his own stereotypes and drop some of the goofier kidstuff.
