3.0étoiles sur 5 Solid but incomplete, Mars 14 2003
Par Un client
This review is from: DEED OF PAKSENARRION (Paperback)
I found the Deed of Paksenarrion to be solid fantasy with a disappointing ending. To its credit, the details of military life seem quite realistic, as do the battle scenes. It has engaging plot elements, and interesting twists and turns. Unfortunately, it leaves several key plot points unfinished. Perhaps these were meant to be resolved in some future, unannounced sequel. A dozen more pages could have wrapped up those elements to make the book far more satisfying. Also, I found unnecessary repetition of elements a little tedious, with stories retold several times, though from different characters' viewpoints. Finally, I feel that the testimonial on the inside cover page, comparing Moon to Tolkein is an absolute sham; There is nowhere near the backstory, depth of character, or plot of the master. Still, it's not a bad read.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Could have been just one book, Avril 1 2002
Par Un client
This review is from: DEED OF PAKSENARRION (Paperback)
This series is fun, but dull. Endless military drills and tiresome, pointless squabbles detract from the story. There isn't even a good romance, unless Paks' romance with beng a true born Paladin counts.

Hey! Fantasy writers! Attend! 1) Have a coherent reason for writing your story. Don't just rip off Tolkein. 2) Remember, you are telling a STORY, not showing how much you know about military tactics, obscure religions, and heraldry. 3) succinctness is at least as important as atmosphere, and 4) relationships make a story. It doesn't have to be romance, it can be hatred. But the relationships have to work for the reader.

Sigh. If it wasn't for George Martin I'd have given up on fantasy long ago. Don't expect this series to slake your need for quality fantasy.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Good start, weak finish..., Juil 10 2000
This review is from: DEED OF PAKSENARRION (Paperback)
The story of Paks began as an epic adventure where a woman left home to pursue a dream that her father tried to beat out of her. She joins a military campaign and learns to become a warrior. The first book of the series begins very strong and describes the rise of Paks and goes into detail on the military training of soldiers. When I read the first book I was excited to see what would become of our hero Paks.

Unfortunately I would have to agree with a fellow reviewer, Ms Kay, in saying that the next two books did not live up to my expectations. Paks progressively becomes less human and more saint-like as the books continues. I had hoped that Paks, being a hard nosed warrior, would at least have some difficulty following the religious mantra that a Paladin has to obey. Alas, Paks falls into the character pitfall of living up to almost every ideal that one can think of, and this caused me to loose interest in seeing her character develop. The story itself was fairly entertaining though, evidence by my finishing the book, but being focused solely on Paks, there was not enough world generation. All we knew about was the world according to Paks. And this aspect became a little disheartening considering how almost perfect Paks turned out to be.

The other serious problem I found with the story line was the completely forgotten father and family. For a character who became so noble and respectful of tradition, Paks seems to have been unable to stand up and face her father, even though she was able to withstand the excessive torture she endured in the final book.

All in all it was an interesting read, but don't let the reviews fool you. The plot is fairly transparent and linear, and the character development is disappointing.
