5.0étoiles sur 5 Fantasy meets Science Fiction meets Combat Psychology, Mai 31 2006
Par Ori Pomerantz (Austin, TX USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
It's centuries in the future, but because interstellar travel destroys advanced technology humanity is limited to pre-industrial tech on most worlds. The alien races and low technology give the book a Fantasy feel that is somewhat similar to John Ringo's Council Wars series.

However, in contrast to the Council Wars, the heroes here are not super-human. Instead, they are realistic people, trying to adapt to whatever life throws at them. Since life in this case involves a sneak attack by an enemy followed by the beginnings of a war, that's not easy, even for trained fighters. The characters are lovingly crafted by a Dave Grossman, a combat psychologist. They "feel" very real, ready to just off the page.

The one problem I have with this book is the sequel, or rather lack thereof. It's too good a book not to have a sequel to it.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Another triumph for Colonel Grossman, Aoû 6 2004
Dave Grossman's The Two Space War is a five-star winner. Though it is the first science fiction book this voracious reader has ever picked up, I didn't put it down until the end. Grossman's previous books on the art and science of combat are path-breaking, must-reads for any serious student of combat and any true warrior. I teach a course on the psycho-physiology of combat that relies heavily on Grossman's previous works for class readings. Though I use Grossman's On Killing as a text, I'm adding the The Two Space War to the "highly recommended" list for my warrior science students. I'm not a Gen X learner, but everyone loves to learn when learning is fun, and here it is!

The book presents combat principles through the eyes of futuristic/historical warriors' experiences. Immersing one's self in the excitement of a fast-paced plot and "can't wait to turn the page" action reinforces survival science fundamentals that keep the good guys winning the battles. Before this book, I had just finished John Boyd's Mind of War and was considering how best to present the concept of the Observation-Orientation-Decision-Action (OODA) loop in class. There's a great passage in The Two Space War that does just that, and I'll be reading it in class.

I picked up the book because of the author's reputation. I loved the book because of the author's consummate skill in telling the story and teaching the science.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Exciting must read, Juil 16 2004

As a police officer and a science fiction fan, this book far exceeds any expectations I could've have imagined. If you can image blending fact from Mr. Grossman's previous books into a fictional setting. Exciting is one word. If you are in law enforcement, the military, or even a civilian who enjoys such subjects, you will enjoy this one.
