Product Description

There may not be a cure for adolescence, but there are ways for parents of teens to survive these challenging years! Parenting expert Tom McMahon has gone straight to the source -- veteran moms and dads -- to try and solve the mysteries of raising a happy, healthy teenager. Gathered here are hundreds of practical, creative, and proven tips that cover all aspects of parenting a teen:

  • Rules and Discipline -- Keep order while encouraging your child's independence, and pick your "battles" for what matters the most
  • Talking and Listening -- Get to know when to sympathize, when to back off, and how to deal with your teen's inevitable moodiness
  • School and Learning -- Free yourself from being the "homework cop," while nurturing both curiosity and enthusiasm
  • Friendships and Relationships -- Use role-playing to handle peer pressure, and help nurture healthy relationships
  • Drugs and Alcohol -- Pinpoint telltale signs of problems before they become serious, and stay involved by providing alternatives to parties with alcohol
  • Responsibilities and Money -- Strike a balance between chores and allowance, and make part-time jobs an introduction to money management
  • Self-Esteem and Values -- Enhance your teen's exposure to role models who will strengthen character and boost self-confidence.

Whatever the situation, Teen Tips is full of down-to-earth, inventive advice. It's an indispensable guide to navigating the teen years -- and making the journey as rewarding for the parent as it is for the aspiring young adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent communication strategies!, Mar 15 2000
By Kerry Bremhorst (Pittsburg, California.) - See all my reviews
I'm a 30 yr. old, married woman who doesn't have kids yet, but I can assure you that Tom's tips will be used when that day comes! Tom's "tips" are universal and apply to many of the CURRENT issues facing teens and their parents today. Furthermore, it's a book I have highly recommended to many of my friends who have children that are just now entering adolescence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book For All Ages, Mar 15 2000
By Serena Z. (California, USA) - See all my reviews
As a 21 year old college student who is more than a few years away from being the parent of a teenager, I have gained a broad range of perspective from reading Tom McMahon's Teen Tips. Not only was I able to relate firsthand to many of the issues presented, but I also came to realize what a complex and educational experience it is for parents in cultivating nurturing relationships with their teens. I appreciated the personal accounts that are so prevalent in this book, as they help to make the approach more personal of the issues at hand. McMahon does not "sugar coat," oversimplify, or overdramatize the issues that he speaks about, which is refreshing and realistic in a time when all too many adults want to be a "pal" instead of a guide to teens. I will definitely keep this book so that I may refer to it in working with adolescents as a teacher, and in parenting teenagers of my own. There is a multitude of creative and loving strategies toward building healthy relationships with teenagers in Tom McMahon's book and I definitely recommend reading it to those who are teachers, and to those who work or live with a teenager.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Teen Tips" extra tip, Mar 13 2000
I am a single mother, divorced with three children in this age catagory. While I found most of the tips helpful, I found the book lacking in advice for divorced parents. More than 50% of homes are now divorced and less than one chapter is dedicated to this issue. I would also like to add my own tip...never talk bad about your ex-spouse in front of the kids. This cuts like a knife into their very soul. The author has my permission to use this in his next revision. Carole V., Hayward, CA
