About the Author

Dr. Paul Pimsleur devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world's leading experts in applied linguistics. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed The Pimsleur Method based on two key principles:  the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called ?Graduated Interval Recall.?  This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the Pimsleur Programs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to the normally excellent Pimsleur standard, April 7 2004
By Bighairydoofus "-" (Brooklyn Park, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This is supposed to be an extension of the comprehensive Pimsleur German courses. German "Plus" is an afterthought and a waste of time. German 1-3 are excellent, but do yourself a favor and take the cash you'd have spent on this and get Schaum's Outlines German Grammar instead, along with a set of the Vis-ed German vocabulary cards.

5.0 out of 5 stars How This Course Relates to the Other Pimsleur German Courses, Jul 7 2003
By Clare Pawling (Denver, Colorado) - See all my reviews
Perhaps this information will help someone who is wondering where to start with the Pimsleur German courses. I selected this Pimsleur "German Plus" course with the intent to recapture my old school German, from the very beginning of study. While this course seems excellent, it is not the course with which to start. Phoning Pimsleur, I learned that this "German Plus" course contains their lessons 91 through 100, which should follow their German Level III Comprehensive course. Each of the three Comprehensive Levels contains 30 lessons, all together numbered 1-30, 31-60, and 61-90. Additionally, note that the several less expensive Pimsleur offerings each contain lessons that are in the Level I Comprehensive course. If you start with one of the shorter courses, and then you wish to go further, you will have to obtain Level I, which will contain all the lessons that you already have studied. The gist of the story is: pay the bigger bucks to start with Level I Comprehensive, following up, if you wish, with Level II, Level III, and "German Plus". All this might be obvious to someone more clever than I; yet, I have not seen this information in print.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really very good, but...., April 12 2002
By A Customer
I used the complete Pimsleur course: I - III and German Plus. It gave me exactly what I needed--practice and confidence in conversation. It was all review for me, as I'd studied German before, a considerable amount of study on my own. I found that the cassettes were perfect for my long daily commute. I would listen to two lessons in the morning and listen to the same two in the evening. Although the course didn't really add a lot to my vocabulary and very little to my knowledge of grammar, the conversation practice was great. Especially for those like me, who have studied a lot on their own, conversation can be difficult. Practice is invaluable in breaking down what I call the brain-tongue barrier. (So many times listening to the tapes, I had the answer in my head but just couldn't get it out of my mouth in time!)

Having said that, I would hate for this course to be my introduction to German. I would hate to do this course without knowing some grammar and the principles of German pronunciation. In addition, I find that the words and phrases chosen for special help with pronunciation were not consistent. In effect, some of the simpler words were emphasized like this, but more complex words like "Dolmetscher" were breezed over in conversations. And some of the basics in vocabulary were not covered--for instance, I don't think the complete list of months was covered, and learning all seven days took quite a few lessons!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if I haven't heard it yet, I'd give it MAX RATE
Pimsleur is absolutely effective, it will help you on German learning, and probably for sure on any other language they teach.
