Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Pilcher is known for her warm, compassionate tales of English family life. But this 1967 novella, available on audio for the first time, is not one of her better efforts. An orphan brought up by her maternal grandmother, 20-year-old Selena has always wondered about her never-mentioned father. Her only link to him is a photograph, and when she spots, on the back of a book jacket, an author photo with an uncanny resemblance to her father, she impetuously takes off for Spain to find him. Selena's extreme na vet becomes irritating after a while, and suspenseful and comic moments seem forced and drawn out. Narrator Carey excels at voicing the many quarrels in this book, easily switching from Selena's high-pitched, protesting voice to an exasperated male tone. Unfortunately, she has no facility for accents. She's fine for the Brits: Selena, her fianc , the author Selena suspects is her father. But much of the action takes place on an island off the coast of Spain, and Carey's Spanish accent for the supporting characters is simply not credible. An American character, too, sounds anything but American. (May)

From AudioFile

Having grown up believing that her father had been killed in the war, Selena sees a picture of a man on a book jacket who resembles him so much that she travels to Spain on her own to find him. Narrator Jan Carey is superb at producing the innocence and naïveté of the young Selena, as well as her frustration and yearning as she searches for her father and comes to terms with her own feelings. She also portrays George, the object of Selena's quest, with all the qualities of a likable rogue. The enthusiasm that comes through in Carey's performance makes up for any flaws with the Spanish and American accents of minor characters. 1.0 out of 5 stars Pass!, Jun 3 2004
By A Customer
I really like Pilcher but this book is... bad, there's no other word. The characters simply don't stand up. We begin with interaction between Selina and her fiancé and right away, we wonder why on earth he should be his fiancé and never get a valid answer.
Selina gets on my nerves with her lack of character, her stubbornness, helplesness and lack of personality. George Dyer acts like a jerk. We never get to understand how they can ever become attracted to each other when they're presented to us as both so annoying. Maybe that's the key: they'll make a perfectly annoying pair.
An ordinary, clumsily written book that doesn't do any justice to the author of The shell seekers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and touching, Sep 25 2001

This was actually one of my favorite Rosamunde Pilcher books. I certainly agree that it's not quite on a par with The Shell Seekers, which is one of my favorite novels of all time. This novel does lack some flow, but has some great, funny scenes. My favorite is the one when George walks in and finds Selina in his house and the conversation that ensues before she tells him she thinks he may be her father. If you're a Rosamunde Pilcher fan, (and even if you haven't "met" her yet) this is worth reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars A gentle tale but definitely not Pilcher's best
Rosamund Pilcher writes the most engrossing tales with strongly drawn characters and rich plots, but this is by far her weakest tale. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Rosamunde Pilcher Greatly Improved with Age
Although I would recommend that any fan of Rosamunde Pilcher read this book, I have to say it is perhaps my least favorite of all of hers. Read more
