Benny Cooperman is a thoroughly Canadian sleuth. He's a Jewish private investigator who hails from Grantham, a small industrial town in southwestern Ontario, Canada. He's fond of egg salad sandwiches on white bread, and, like his creator, Howard Engel, he has a snappy sense of humour, which often gets Cooperman into trouble. Part Philip Marlowe, part Woody Allen, he's a soft-boiled sleuth who isn't a lady's man, gets sick at the sight of blood, doesn't carry a gun, hates violent crime, and isn't particularly successful at what he does. It's his sheer dogged determination that wins the day every time.

In his first appearance, The Suicide Murders, he's up to his neck in trouble. He's been called in to determine whether a series of suicides are in fact murders and, in typical Cooperman fashion, finds himself in hot water with law enforcers and criminals alike. Engel brings a gentle sense of humour, a talent for plotting, and the love of a first-rate mystery to his creation of Benny Cooperman, Canada's answer to Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone. Check out some of Cooperman's other exploits in The Ransom Game, Dead and Buried, There Was an Old Woman, and Getting Away with Murder. --Jeffrey Canton --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The New Yorker

"Benny is likable and resourceful, and Mr. Engel has conceived a classic (revenge and retribution) Ross Macdonald plot, and a good one." --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.
