In a time of near Jane Austen-mania, what better heroine to solve a mystery than Jane herself? Only two things are required: a satisfying, well-structured whodunit plot and a knack for rendering Austen's style at picking up the most delicate nuances in social behavior. Stephanie Barron succeeds on both counts. When the squire of a country manor in Hertfordshire is found lifeless in his bed, foul play is suspected and Jane is called upon to unravel the mystery. Along the way, Barron employs Jane as the first-person narrator and adeptly re-creates Austen's voice and delightfully subtle humor. --Ce texte provient de la Hardcover édition.

From Publishers Weekly

With this series opener, Barron catches the Jane Austen popularity wave with impeccable timing?but that may be the best that can be said of this debut. Purportedly editing Austen manuscripts found in an old Maryland estate, Barron recounts the suspicious death of the elderly Frederick Payne, Earl of Scargrave. Anonymous notes accuse Isobel, Austen's friend and Payne's young bride, and a "grey-hared Lord" of murdering the earl. Intensifying Isobel's misery is Lord Harold Trowbridge, who badgers the widow to sell him her estate in Barbados. Concerned for her friend and for Fitzroy Payne, the new earl who not-so-secretly loves Isobel, Austen undertakes snooping that leads her to a second corpse and leads Isobel and Fitzroy to trial before the House of Lords. As Austen explores a passel of suspects who are heavy-handedly cast as the originals for the characters in her novels, the reader is offered imitation scholarly footnotes. To be truly helpful, Barron might have better explained how Austen hears Big Ben, a bell cast some 40 years after her death. Austen as mystery writer is an appealing idea, but inadequately served here. Author tour.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Interesting Idea, Juil 8 2004

This was an interesting concept for a novel series. This first one was a little slow, but personalites and characters needed to be defined. Hopefully they will become quicker and more humorous (in keeping with Ms Austen's humor).

4.0étoiles sur 5 Can't Wait to Read the Rest of the Series, Avril 22 2004

(REAL NAME)
No, it isn't anything like a Jane Austen book. But it's a good mystery all the same, and the Jane character is an likeable heroine. Like other reviewers, I found Lady Isobel annoying and not worth the effort that Jane put into her friendship, but that makes Miss Austen all the more admirable. I plan to pick up the rest of the series right away, and hope they are as enjoyable.

3.0étoiles sur 5 A Valiant Effort, Oct. 8 2003
Par Un client
The idea of a mystery in the style of Jane Austen was very appealing to me, and though this book does captivate, keeping to Jane Austen's style seems to have been too large a task for Stephanie Barron. I was consistenly irritated by lines borrowed from Austen's works, and even more annoyed by Barron's presumptions that Austen had based her characters on the people in this novel. The book is very good when left to stand on its own - the plot twists are many and surprising, and the general style is somewhat refreshing. The only reason I can't give it full marks, is that Barron failed in keeping up the ruse that it was all written by Jane Austen. Austen never borrowed from herself in her novels, and I just don't find it likely that her journal would be any different. Also, some of the ideas presented here are just a little bit too raw, and are obviously the work of a modern writer. Hats off to Barron for the valiant attempt, but recreating Jane Austen's style is a difficult task even for the best scholars.

I could not put this book down. It is so wonderful, and a great introduction into the series. As soon as I was finished with this one, I had to run out and buy all the others.
