From Publishers Weekly

Lucy Sullivan, the eponymous heroine of Irish writer Keyes's second offbeat romantic comedy to be published in the U.S. (after Watermelon), fancies herself simultaneously miserable and happy. A 26-year-old Londoner, Lucy is the kind of woman who thinks that any man who's decent to her must be Mr. Wrong. But when she visits a fortune-teller with a trio of mismatched friends, a marriage is predicted for the near future. When the fortune-teller's prophecies for the other three come true in peculiar ways, even disbelieving, boyfriendless Lucy begins to suspect that, somehow, wedding bells will ring for her. The identity of the lucky man will come as no surprise, though Lucy remains oblivious until the very end, but there are many eligible bachelors on the scene, among them Gus, Lucy's sexy but unreliable new lover; Daniel, her oldest friend; Chuck, a handsome American; and Adrian, the video shop man. The attendant mayhem includes drunken meals at ethnic restaurants, flamenco dancing accidents, blind dates gone wrong and many delicious confessions and revelations. As Lucy says, "I was still at that stage in my life when I thought that weekdays were for recovering from the weekend," but more often than not, her weekdays are as full of exhausting fun as her weekends. Surprisingly for a comic novel, the book also takes on the serious themes of clinical depression and alcoholism, handling both with sensitivity and humor. Throughout, the effervescent narrative is fueled by witty repartee; though its outcome may be predictable, its sentiments are heartfelt, and its progress is sprightly. Fans of Bridget Jones will be delighted. Agent, Russell Galen of Scovil Chichak Galen. (Aug.) Holiday.

1.0étoiles sur 5 Mourn the trees that died that this book might live, Fév 18 2004
Par Roberta (Richmond Hill, Ontario Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I chose this title for my review for two reasons. One, after reading half the book, I started to check for some indication that it was printed on recycled paper so there might be some environmental redeeming quality to this book to make up for the unremarkable literary quality. Alas, there was none! Two, the author gave Lucy (in an attempt to make her more sympathetic) a history of depression and describes an occasion where finding a single lost mitten made her cry for the lonely companion mitten. I can only imagine Lucy's mental state in envisioning the forests cleared so this book could be printed.
The basic plot is similar to "Bridget Jones'Diary" but the execution falls very much short. I bought it because it was billed as a book fans of Bridget Jones would like, NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!. I actively disliked each and every character. The male character I disliked least is obviously the one she will end up with, although it doesn't say much for his taste that he likes Lucy. The author apparently never met a cultural stereotype she didn't like or feel the need to exploit. The Irish characters are drunken layabouts. The Scottish character is mean.
The story dragged a great deal and was so boring that I gave up on it. I read several hundred pages but couldn't bring myself to finish it. This was the first novel I had read by this author and, needless to say, will be the last.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Not the best Marian Keyes, Sep 22 2003
I have read Sushi for Beginners, and The Last Chance Saloon. Those are better, with more sympathetic characters. This book really dragged in the middle. It picked up for me after I visualized Lucy as a child of an alcoholic and understood the issues that causes. As others have reviewed, you can tell by the first 50 pages who she ends up with. It's too bad that the book drags out this conclusion for so long. Don't start with this as your first Marian Keyes, as it may then be your last.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Lucy is Great, Jui 14 2003

(REAL NAME)
"Lucy Sullivan is getting married" by Marian Keyes is a great book! Ms. Keyes gives the reader a great plot, characters that reader wants to read more about and most of all she deals with real life and not some fantasy life that is found in many "Chick-Lit" books that you see today. This is a great book for summertime or anytime.
