Product Description
For the waitresses at Lyons Corner House at Marble Arch, rationing, air-raids, and blackouts mean life is no longer as carefree as it used to be. But new pain and pleasure lie in wait as each decides what effort she can make towards victory. Jo yearns for Nick, but when he is hideously burned while fighting, he needs the still-experimental procedure of plastic surgery. Jo loses herself in her new life working among women hewing timber for the war effort, and Phyl has been selected for secret work with munitions. Her husband is far away, but she never loses faith that one day they will be reunited.
About the Author
Some of Lilian Harry's earliest memories are of nights spent in a Portsmouth air-raid shelter, listening to the drone of enemy aircraft. But they are also of warm family life continuing in spite of the fears and anxieties of the time. She is married and lives in Devon.
