5.0 out of 5 stars Rich story, beautiful and intelligent characters, Dec 18 2007
This review is from: Sundowners (Paperback)
A friend of mine recommended this book to me two years ago and it somehow fell through the cracks. Once I picked it up, I fell for this book and its characters. Although, I'm nearly finished this book I cant wait for Lokko's other books. She has an amazing gift or talent for understand the human psyche and the complexity of female friendships, marriage and South African history. She has made some of these topics particularly South African history accessible to all readers whether they took these courses in school or not. Don't be intimidated by the length of this book- I wish it'd go on for longer. I adore all the characters (which is difficult to come by in books, often times). In truth, sometimes I feel there could've been more time spent on their background. I cant wait to read her next novel, Saffron Skies. I think Lokko's voice is a powerful, captivating and intriguing new voice in women's fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic novel, Sep 7 2006
By Chelsea "Chels20" (Winnipeg, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sundowners (Paperback)
Excellent book! I would recommend this book to anyone who usually reads "chick-lit" type books but is looking for something different and more in-depth and intellectual. It is a fantastic story of four women and their journey together from children to adulthood. Their lives are intricately weaved but each has their own story and own struggles. Each woman's life and story is so intriguing and diverse, it's impossible not to be hooked! Mixed in is a descriptive plot-line involving politics in South Africa, racism and a whole lot of controversy....it's a heart-wrenching and uplifting story that is impossible to put down! Although a long novel, each page is interesting and keeps you wanting more. I found this book very refreshing after years of reading Marian Keyes, Maeve Binchy, Sophie Kinsella and Jennifer Weiner (although I still have a soft spot in my heart for those authors....) I hope to see more of Lesley Lokko's books in future!!!
