From Publishers Weekly

The power of friendship and love prevail against unlikely odds in Lokko's overstuffed, globe-trotting family epic. The saga, which begins in 1972 London, primarily focuses on lonely Amber Sall and her friends, artistically gifted Becky Aldridge and poor, intelligent Madeline Szabo. Amber yearns for the approval of her illustrious father, Max, but he's too occupied with his work and second family in Rome to notice. Amber's half-sister, the gorgeous Paola, grows into a vixen, and the two compete over everything, including, eventually, Tendé Ndiaye, a West African business associate of their father. Years blur together as Amber and friends embark on their own lives, rarely making contact with one another aside from infrequent visits; Madeline becomes a doctor, Becky finds work in a gallery and Amber becomes a journalist before marrying Tendé. Paola never outgrows her licentiousness, and it proves, predictably, to be her undoing. Political strife in Mali, meanwhile, portends possible disaster for Tendé, but help from an unexpected source saves the day. Stilted pacing slows an already meandering plot, though the few surprise turns should keep readers going. (Nov.)

Product Description

Max Sall, powerful, wealthy and utterly ruthless, a man without a past. His wife, Angela, a society debutante who fell in love with the dark, handsome chauffeur, and broke her parents' hearts when she married him. His mistress: Francesca, the glamorous Alitalia air stewardess, who saw in Max her ticket out of the Italian provinces and grabbed it - and him - with both hands. And his daughters: Amber, more like her father than she'll ever know - smart, shrewd and determined to achieve, whatever the cost; and Paola, groomed by her mother to succeed where she failed, in getting a man to marry her. Max's women are very different, but they all demand his attention. While Amber and Paola are growing up in the 1970s, their mothers somehow find a way to share Max between them. But when Amber and Paola fall in love with the same man two decades later, they're determined that this time there will be no sharing...Moving effortlessly across five decades, SAFFRON SKIES is a magnificent story of sisters, friends, families and love from Lesley Lokko, one of the most outstanding new voices in commercial fiction.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Amazing book!, Sep 7 2006
Par Chelsea "Chels20" (Winnipeg, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires

I absolutely loved every page of this book. I love how the author can involve so many characters and their different stories into plot and manage to keep you intersted and able to follow all of them..... This book is written in a similar fashion as Sundowners but I did not feel as if I was reading the same book twice...it's totally different but equally as good! I would recommend this book to anyone who usually reads chick-lit but is looking for something different and a bit more in-depth but still an easy read.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Saffron Skies Review, Fév 25 2006
Par Un client
This review is from: Saffron Skies (Paperback)
The back of this book does no justice to how amazing and complex it really is. I was expecting an enjoyable romance/battle of sisters but instead gained insight into European lifestyle, African politics and extremely complicated life situations that make you realize your family is actually somewhat normal. As you read through the book you become attacted to the characters and by the end feel that all you want is more. A definate great read that is well rounded in all aspects of life.

5.0étoiles sur 5 Couldn't put it down, Nov. 4 2005

This review is from: Saffron Skies (Hardcover)
This book was really great. I love the way it was written, different characters all related in some way to one another. It follows them through the confusing times in their lives, and shows how really ome families are not perfect. The description of the book does not give the book justice. It was an amazing book, and it was written so well. It's been awhile since i've read a book that you way to read all day and when you can't your thinking what will happen in the book. It's not predictable, and it's a book I really enjoyed. i've just bought "Sundowners". I'm hoping for another great read. I highly reccommend this book.

2.0étoiles sur 5 Failed Expectations
With all the hype, I was expecting a good, solid read.
The book is very episodic and skips over huge chunks of time. I am not a fan of this technique. Read more
