Book Description

It's late autumn in Edinburgh and late autumn in the career of Detective Inspector John Rebus. As he tries to tie up some loose ends before retirement, a murder case intrudes. A dissident Russian poet has been found dead in what looks like a mugging gone wrong. By apparent coincidence a high-level delegation of Russian businessmen is in town, keen to bring business to Scotland. The politicians and bankers who run Edinburgh are determined that the case should be closed quickly and clinically. But the further they dig, the more Rebus and his colleague DS Siobhan Clarke become convinced that they are dealing with something more than a random attack - especially after a particularly nasty second killing. Meantime, a brutal and premeditated assault on local gangster 'Big Ger' Cafferty sees Rebus in the frame. Has the Inspector taken a step too far in tying up those loose ends? Only a few days shy of the end to his long, inglorious career, will Rebus even make it that far?

From the Publisher

The brilliant new Rebus novel from the master of British crime.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for mature fans of mystery, Dec 30 2007
By Road King (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
A intricately plotted, meticulously written book which has hanging over it and ends with D.I. Rebus' imposed retirement. Introspective for both the protagonist and the reader, as we reflect on our own lives and careers, the battles with office hierarchy, and the shadows of long-standing enemies.
Superb for its genre, and for any novel, by any standard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super book!, Nov 28 2007

What initially drew me to this book was the setting: Edinburgh. I'd lived there once and wanted to see if this author--any author--did the city justice. I can happily say that Ian Rankin did. This story begins around the death of a Russian poet. It appears that it has been a random accident during a mugging, but soon more information comes to light and we're led down a great, frantic trail to find out who did what to whom....any why. The plot in this book FLIES and gives new meaning to the term "page turner." This is a crime novel, and ordinarily I'd warn people away from it, but this one's different. It's great and a lot of fun. If you enjoyed DA VINCI CODE, then this book will work for you. Also recommended are KITE RUNNER and LIFE OF PI.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a huge Rankin fan, Nov 18 2007

So I was quite excited to come into possession of an advance readers copy of this book a few weeks ago. I have to keep mum as to how this happened but it is kind of cool to get to read it before the general public! I won't give anything away other than to say this is a fitting end to the series, and another great read. The story starts out with the death of a Russian poet who at first appears to have been the victim of a mugging. However after a little digging there is more here than meets the eye. Rebus soon fears he may have dug a little too deep. Its sad to see the career of Inspector Rebus come to an end, but what a ride!
