I picked up Hitman awhile ago, on a whim and because it was on sale. I thoroughly enjoyed it. So I saw Hit and Run and picked it up on a whim. And it was as enjoyable, perhaps even more so, than the first in the series.

It is a very interesting character study of a hitman; one who has been framed for a murder he did not commit. There is little gore and other than his career choice, Keller is an average man just trying to live his life. This novel has a lot more suspense than Hitman did, and it keeps you turning the pages because you care what happens to Keller and need to know how it gets resolved.

However, I suspect the novel would be a little less suspenseful if you had not read any other in the Keller series because this novel does not explore the origins or relationships or lifestyle of Keller and Dot; it just covers this one "issue" of being framed. This makes it more like a suspense/thriller novel than the character study Hitman is.

This is another yarn about the jolly hit man and stamp collector, John Keller, who is trying to retire from his homicidal career. It is lightweight entertainment, although as usual with Keller, you need to overlook the dead bodies he leaves behind.

Anyway, out in Des Moines, Iowa, to kill some shlub, he finds himself publicized as the likely killer of a prominent politician visiting Des Moines from another state who happens to get offed while Keller is in town. Obviously, whoever sent Keller to Des Moines wants to end his career for good by getting him put away or killed by the police.

That's the setup for what turns into a procedural detailing Kellers attempt to get back to the safe haven of his apartment in New York. Along the way, he learns that the haven isn't safe anymore, and that his carefully hoarded resources are gone. The only way out of it is to find the source of his problem and expunge it. And this is what happens.

Imagine a world where everything unexpectedly moves in reverse: Doing your job could send you to jail; going home may mean meeting a hit man who is out to get you; instead of having money and credit, you have to steal to survive; any stranger can be a lethal threat; your most precious possessions are gone forever; and your best friend is dead. Lawrence Block uses that concept to humanize hit man John Keller and to provide you with lots of sociopathic humor about the normally unflappable killer.

The first half of this book amused me more than any other section in the earlier books in the series. I think you'll like it. I also think you'll like it more if you've read the earlier books in the series.

The second half wasn't nearly so much fun, but except for one lengthy sequence about a golf course it moved along pretty well in typical fashion for a Keller story.

I came away from the book with lots of questions about what might come next in Keller's life. When that happens, I know a book has been well written. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.
