Beach bum Ned Kelly, a part-time lifeguard, pool guy and errand runner in Palm Beach, Fla., has just scored with beautiful, rich Tess McAuliffe. Life sure is looking up, especially from his days back in chilly South Boston. He's looking forward to another round with Tess, but first he has to help some smalltime hoodlum pals commit a $60-million art heist. It's supposed to be an easy job, but everything goes to hell—the paintings they were after weren't even there—and soon enough his pals are all dead, as is Tess. Ned goes on the run, accused of the murders and the heist as well. He flees back to Boston, but gets caught by cute-as-a-button FBI agent Ellie Shurtleff, assigned to investigate the case for the agency's Art Theft and Fraud department. After some rough stuff, he takes her hostage and in short order they've bonded. Ellie can see that Ned's a good guy who could never have committed the crimes he's charged with, so the two of them join forces to bring down the actual thieves and killers. It's a twisty story that will engage the interest of beach-goers everywhere, whose sun-addled brains will put up with pedestrian writing and an improbable plot just to find out exactly whodunit and why.

Campbell makes the listener feel Ned's emotions as the thief becomes a hero and then tries to impress the girl. Music, along with the occasional sound effects, such as gunshots and motorcycle chases, add to the fun and intrigue. Call me crazy, but I don't have much time to read, and like an author who "gets right down to it." Enter Patterson with his Lifeguard and other novels. I'm a sucker for short chapters and an entertaining read, and that's probably why I picked out his latest book along with McCrae's Katzenjammer to read while on a trip to California. Perfect stuff, these two. You can't miss with a Patterson novel, at least for brevity and entertainment.

This book is touted as a beach read and it could set the pace for thrillers of this type. It entertains, maintains your interest but is not particularly demanding intellectually. A crime, theft and murder of grand proportions, takes place in Palm Beach, Florida amidst the wealthy and privileged. The theft involves famous and expensive paintings. Ned Kelly finds himself at the periphery of the crime but at the heart of all accusations as the FBI and police place him at the top of their suspect list and hunt him down. On the run he tries to uncover the true culprits and finds an unlikely friend in Ellie Shurtleff, an FBI agent who has a MFA in art and whose primary purpose is to track the art. Love, sex, suspense and violence come together in a raw and gutsy mix.

This was an amazing thriller it has everything I expected of one; it has so many twists and turns, very puzzling, never ending action and intrigue. This novel delivered all this plus more, I really enjoyed it.
