Montefiore shows how Stalin killed millions of people, including many of his friends, allies and family, but more interestingly he shows how he got away with it and how his power endured to the end of his life. We get to know his circle of fanatical allies and how selfish, yet stunningly intelligent, he could be. The depth of information is impressive, with all the letters Montefiore could find in the archives, we can see some aspects of the day-to-day life at Stalin's court, and how he ruled. Montefiore shows all his brutality but at the same time defends him for crimes he did not commit. I find this book most interesting in that he does the same for Stalin's courtiers, from Beria and Khrushchev to lesser known like Bulganin and Poskrebychev. Most of all, Montefiore seems intent on keeping honest, even if we can see a tendency to favour a certain faction of Stalin's circle.

I am no book reviewer, but I feel compelled to write a few lines about Stalin. It'd be a shame if others did not read this book, particularily they're interested in the subject.

So who was Joseph Stalin? In this interesting account of the dictator's reign, based on new research and interviews, Montefiore paints a portrait of the man and his circle. He is often called a monster and we find why. No one was safe from him, not ordinary people, colleagues or even his family. By the time of his death at the age of 75, Stalin was responsible for the death of 20 million people. As well, he created the slave labour system of the Gulag and deported whole nations.

Although first recognized and patronized by Lenin, it was realized too late that Stalin was a threat. As they say the rest is history.

There are many fascinating stories behind the statistics in this book. Montefiore was the spark for my belated interest in history. Provided I can find more authors like Mr. Montefiore, I have a life-long hobby now.
