But her Pa died, and she and her mother have been left with nothing but a dreary future. As Boyd recounts the tale, we are held in awe by the environment she creates with her enchanting voice: the peacefulness of the quiet sea, the soft lapping of the waves. Every vocal change enhances a well-researched plot. If not for books, who would remember that there were nine mail deliveries per day in the good old days? An 11-year-old companion sat transfixed while listening to the performance. When asked if she liked the story, she replied, "I love her voice." That sums it up. J.P.
