Book Description

Filled with action, adventure, mystery, and historical detail, the Sackett saga is an unforgettable achievement by one of America's greatest storytellers. In Mustang Man, Louis L'Amour tells the tale of a man who lived by his own law-even if it meant being branded an outlaw.  Lost gold on the Santa Fe trail.

Nolan Sackett was running ahead of a posse when he stopped to help a wagon stuck on the plains.  But why was it stranded in the middle of nowhere with a beautiful-and murderous-young woman?  Nolan was trying to find out when he ran into Penelope Hume, another attractive lady.  She was the key to a cache of gold hidden in the mountains.  But to get the rightful heiress there first, Nolan would have to help her beat out jealous relations, paid assassins, and a killer without a conscience...  all maddened by gold fever.

From the Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

He could outride and outshoot five men, but he was a fool for a lady in distress. The posse was hot on his trail for murder when he took time out to rescue Sylvie from a gang of desperadoes. It wasn't till she'd bushwhacked him with a shotgun and tried to poison him that he realized she was up to no good. And no sooner he had he shot his way out of her clutches than he met Penelope. After he'd heard her sad story, he should have cut and run, but somehow a Sackett never seem s to learn the easy way. --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why I Read L'Amour, Feb 16 2004
By Samuel B. White "Tuttle" (Lawton, OK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had read a couple other Louis L'Amour books before I found this one. It was seventh grade and it so affecimpressed me that I knew then that I would name my first son Nolan, after the main character. It was many years before I had a son, but his name is Nolan.

This book does not cover new ground (literarily speaking) from other L'Amour novels, but in this one he is at the top of his craft. An abrupt beginning and a ride that keeps you clinging to the saddle for the whole story are just a part of it. The characters are real, the locations are so cunningly described you think you're there, and the ending will blow you off the desert.

If you like LL, you'd probably also like my work (which is available at Amazon under the title "First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch")

5.0 out of 5 stars For all who are fans of classic Louis L'Amour westerns, Nov 17 2003
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mustang Man (Audio Cassette)
Mustang Man is the unabridged audiobook presentation of a novel of Old West in the era of gold rush fever, written by the popularly cherished, award-winning author Louis L'Amour. A part of The Sacketts series, this is the story of a man who lives by his own moral code, and finds himself caught in a crossfire between a rightful heiress, her jealous relations, and a remorseless killer. An exciting and dramatic tale of the lengths to which greed can drive human beings, Mustang Man is vividly narrated by Terrence Mann and a "must" for all who are fans of classic Louis L'Amour westerns. (5 hours, 3 cassettes).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Western Adventure Novel, Dec 7 2001
By "nolanj" (Napa, CA USA) - See all my reviews
I'll admit that I have a certain bias towards this book. My parents named me after its central character. This is a really entertaining novel that I would definitely reccommend to any fan of the Western genre. It's the story of a man named Nolan Sackett who, while just trying to escape a posse (he shot a man, but it wasn't his fault, of course), becomes involved in a complicated struggle over a heck of a lot of gold. It may not be one of the "great books of the 20th century," but anyone who expects it to be ought to have his head examined. If you're just looking for some light reading with good characters and an interesting story, then this book is well worth picking up.
