From Amazon.co.uk

In Catch a Fire, her frank and frothy if rather flabby autobiography, Mel B--"Scary Spice"--gives her side of the Spice Girls story. There are a few minor gibes at Mel C (and it's amusing to learn that in the fab five's early days the stick-like Posh did actually subsist on bread sticks), but otherwise fellow Spicies emerge largely unscathed. Those of a more salacious disposition will, however, be pleased to learn that former Spice Girl manager Simon Fuller and ex-husband Jim do not fare quite so well.

Mel explores her formative years in considerable detail here--perhaps in too much detail: there are, for example, more pages devoted to her parents' wallpapering techniques than to Geri Halliwell's dramatic departure from the Spice Girls. Born into a poor mixed race family in Leeds, Mel had a far from cushy childhood. Always a live wire, she admits to finding school boring but says she excelled in dance. Skipping most of her GCSEs to attend auditions, she made her professional stage debut dancing in Blackpool at 16 years of age. Crowned Miss Leeds Weekly News in 1992, she found herself on the "mad ride" to pop superstardom just two years later after being selected to join what was to become the sensational Spice Girls. "I was already living in a busy bus terminal and suddenly it became a train station and an airport all in one" she says of the headiest moments of Spice mania. As this memoir makes clear, Mel is now older, wiser and enjoying being a single mother. With a successful solo career in music, on stage and on television under her belt, she's no longer Scary but, perhaps, Cilla Black in waiting. --Travis Elborough

Review

It's all here: the council estate childhood; the formation of the Spice Girls; the early months of being groomed for stardom; the subsequent global domination; Geri's departure; the marriage - and acrimonious divorce - to the strangely passive Jimmy Gulzar; the birth of Phoenix Chi (unlikely names being de rigueur for pop-star sprogs); the solo career and the move into TV presenting. As few people in the Western world have not heard of Melanie B, the in-your-face loudmouth who is a member of one of the most popular bands of all time, interest is guaranteed. Is she too young to tell her own story? Perhaps - but the fans will ensure healthy sales (before the Spice Girls join all the other pass pop groups cluttering up the remainder bins).

1.0étoiles sur 5 Mel B's vanity fair, Nov. 23 2005
This review is from: Catch A Fire (Paperback)
Nowadays, celebrities seem to think that simply because they are famous, their life deserves to be told in a book. Of course, people are going to want to read it: it's the great Melanie B we're talking about here! Personally, I'm more interested in reading about talented people. I don't plan on reading this book, but I'd really be surprised to see how her version of the Spice Girls story differs from Geri Halliwell's. Melanie B might have been part of one of the biggest groups of all time, but her crediblity as an artist is almost inexistant. And I really don't see how this book could help matters.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Fair and fun!, Avril 13 2004
Par Un client
This review is from: Catch A Fire (Paperback)
I haven't completed this book quite yet, but what I'm noticing is something set apart from the other Spice biographies: she will be happy to tell pleasant anecdotes. Sure it starts with a bang, which seems to be what is suppose to draw you in like a teaser on the telly before the opening sequence and more commercials, but as she describes her experience with the girls she lets us know some of the funner times they had rather than the dramatic estrangement that is often so dwelt on. It's also a fascinating history she provides of where her people come from and the whole mixture of her. She was also my least favourite of the five but now I'm finding her more of a fair and friendly personage than the rest. She seems open to life, the mistakes that make us who we are and let us learn the balance of things. I wish she would make another album and write more of her own songs. They're all good at writing pop melodies (yes, they do co-write songs!) and she is no exception.

Word to the wise: amazon.co.uk is usually easier on the pocket book with some of this british stuff. I got my copies of albums and books from there. (As well as the Harry Potter books, which are an easier print than the ones here.)
