Book Description

Takes a Thief takes readers back to the stunning world of Mercedes Lackey's widely acclaimed Valdemar series. Here, at last, is the untold story of Skif-a character from Lackey's first published novel, Arrows of the Queen. Skif is a homeless orphan who lives with a gang of juvenile pickpockets...until he is "Chosen" by one of Valdemar's magical horses and becomes a Herald serving the Queen.

5.0étoiles sur 5 I think people are missing the point....., Fév 17 2004
Par Un client
This review is from: Take A Thief (Paperback)
I found Take A Thief a really good book, quite frankly I am disappointed to see people who want to know the gory details of street life even in a fantasy novel, I don't know about you but I read fantasy to get away from real life not point fingers at it. There is enough foreshadowing and hints to make up in your own head the trials and tribulations that skif had to endure as a child without getting into details and ransacking the flow of the book. As for Alberich's and Skif's speech, if you have ever played a really good game of AD & D it's called "staying in character", I think the English world tends to forget that other languages literally translated would look very similar to the way Alberich speaks.
I read one review that stated "Skif got off very lightly" which I don't think he did, I just don't think that person could relate to the character of Skif as I did. It may appear on the surface of things that he was lucky yes, but as we see in the Arrows series, and towards the end of the novel, skif is affected internally, not externally. I found it all quite subtle, especially the fringe mentions of Orthallen, which were very characteristic of Orthallen the character, always gently pushing from behind, and keeping himself well hidden in the game.
It's definitely worth a read.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Good..., Fév 14 2004
This review is from: Take A Thief (Paperback)
It's a good book but It's sort of Slow. Or in other words It started slow but got better in the end. Skif's a funny charecter and i think that Lackey could have done it a little better, but all in all it was great!!! What I really like about her book's are the fact that they have Sword play and all types of fencing.

If anyone else likes book's that have fighting in it and Action you should really try KARIN LOWACHEE's books. WARCHILD and BURNDIVE...and coming up in 2005 is the book CAGEBIRD...must read these...

4.0étoiles sur 5 Take a Thief, Aoû 21 2003
This review is from: Take A Thief (Paperback)
I've only read 5 of Lackey's novels - The Heralds of Valdemar trilogy, Winds of Fate, and Take a Thief, but I can say I didn't like TAT as much as the rest. While Skif is an orphan in Haven's slums, he gets off a lot easier than other children in his situation - he meets a member of a gang of "honorable" thieves, who take him in and teach him the art of pickpocketing and cat burglary. Towards the end half of the book, Skif is Chosen by Cymry and taken to the Collegium. The plot is slightly confusing and thin, and what is with Alberich's speech? He does not talk like that in the Arrows books. Stay consistent to your characters, please!
Anyway, this isn't the best of Lackey's novels, for sure. If you're a diehard Valdemar fan and like Skif, then read it, but don't start out with this one. Read one of the better ones, like the Arrow books or the Mage Winds.

5.0étoiles sur 5 GOOD!!!!!!!
I'm a huge Misty fan, and this book was great. The intro was a bit drawn out, and it bore striking resemblance to Oliver Twist, but it was still a great book.

4.0étoiles sur 5 A light read that sits nicely on the brain.
Mercedes Lackey's novel, "Take a Thief", is, over all, a good book. Accents were laid on a little thick, but the story flowed along nicely. Read more
