Let me make one thing clear, I love Mercedes Lackey, I really really do, Arrows of the Queen brought back to me all the wonder of first learning to read.

So I was quite suprised on my second read through to discover I didn't like this latest installment

While I was looking foreward to a return to Valdemar, this book just didn't live up to my high expectations. I didn't really feel like there was an overall story, the characters seemed to lack some development after the original, I felt like there was a bunch of characters that came out of nowhere, like the end was just stapled on and not a growth of situations or characters.

As always, I couldn't wait to start a new book by Mercedes Lackey, and I was not disappointed with this latest edition to the Valdemar series. Although it seemed dark at the beginning, it builds to an "Oliver Twist" like escape, for our young hero. I ended up really enjoying this book. You can see the author is building the characters throughout this first book, so you will be ready for the next one. By the end you want to know more, because you know there is so much more to know about young "Mags", and his many unusual friends. I will watch with anticipation for the next book, to see just what he is capable of, and just who he really is!
