Product Description

Ride Hard, Ride Smart is a practical, hands-on survival guide for the average motorcyclist. This book provides advanced survival and safety strategies for the developing rider. The vast wealth of knowledge and information developed by the motorcycle safety industry is bound into one chapter and one simple concept-the "three degrees of separation"-that sets the stage for the rest of the book. The three degrees of separation are riding strategies, training and skills, and protective gear-the things that separate the rider from death and injury. Hahn rates motorcycle risk and riding on a scale of one to ten, ten being mere moments away from certain death, and one being home safe in bed. Every motorcycle ride falls somewhere in between. Using the three degrees of separation, a rider can get the risk level down to a controllable level, creating the safest possible situation on a moving motorcycle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking in content, long in words., Feb 12 2007
I was disappointed with this book. Maybe I'm expecting too much after reading D. Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling", but this book pales in comparison. Poorly edited (could have been cut down by a third or more), verbose, sometimes downright inaccurate (especially when dealing with statistics) and full of generalities. It is cheap, but despite being more expensive Proficient Motorcycling will give you much more bang for the buck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Presentation=3, Important Content=5, Nov 7 2004
By A Customer
Overall I liked the book quite a bit. It's got a lot of good information, including riding strategies and techniques along with many discussions of why accidents occur. It's made me think about my riding style and ways I can improve it to "ride smarter." So that's a good thing.
The production values of the book are great with some small exceptions for some rather amateurish photos. The use of colour throughout is a highlight.
I don't know Pat Hahn's bibliography, but I suspect this is his (or her?) first book. Some of the writing needs better editing as it, too, seems a little amateur. It doesn't detract from the book much and I applaud the author for taking the time and making the effort to write a book like this.
One particular highlight is the chapter on Night Riding: "Don't ride at night." And that's the entire chapter.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and edited book hides some good advice, Nov 7 2004
By John (Edmonton, Canada) - See all my reviews
I am pretty sure that Paul Hahn is an experienced, knowledgeable motorcycle rider. Unfortunately that is very difficult to be certain of when reading this book. There are some genuine grains of wisdom buried in mounds of useless, repetative verbage. Statistics are anaylized in a bewildering, confused way that results in conclusions which are tenuious at best. Anecdotal occurances are the substance of the book not the illustrative additions they should be. A ruthless editor, a few illustrations and a hundred less pages would result in a worthwhile and readable book.

Should you buy it? I guess so. There are those few grains of wisdom and they were well worth the hours of drudgery to discover. Just take it in small doses.
