Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The eagerly awaited 10th installment (after 2000's Winter's Heart) in Jordan's monumental Wheel of Time has all the breadth and depth that have made this fantasy author one of the acknowledged greats of the genre. Like Tolkien's Ring trilogy, Wheel of Time is a single, extended novel rather than a series, and in Crossroads, new characters join the cast and old favorites grow ever more complex. Yet if the scope of Jordan's richly nuanced creation has won him millions of readers, it also forms the saga's biggest obstacle. Here Mat Cauthon is still fleeing the Seanchan; Perrin Goldeneyes still hunts the Shaido to free his beautiful wife, Faile; the cities Caemlyn and Tar Valon are still besieged and the battles have not been joined. Those impatient with the glacial movement of the last four books will find more of the same. As the title suggests, this entry represents a turning point, a time of momentous decisions as the rebel Aes Sedai consider an alliance with the Asha'man and Rand ponders a truce with the Seanchan. Lending perhaps the most recognizable humanity is Mat's love interest, Tuon, the spoiled, adorable Daughter of the Nine Moons, whose kidnapping is concealed by Valan Luca's Grand Traveling Show and Magnificent Display of Marvels and Wonders. She twists Mat around her finger, deliberately annoying him by calling him "Toy." The epilogue suggests Tuon will play a major role in volume 11. Jordan fans who miss the breakneck pace of the earlier books can always hope the action will pick up again.

From Booklist

The Wheel of Time continues to turn slowly and purposely in the tenth novel in Jordan's popular, epic series. Jordan follows his well-established pattern of tracking the activities of his widely spread characters as he moves them inexorably toward the looming Final Battle between the Dark One and those who oppose it. In this story, Mat flees with the kidnapped Daughter of the Nine Moons, whom he is fated to marry, pursued by the army of the Seanchan Empire as well as by the Dark One. Perrin is trying to rescue his wife, Faile, from the Shaido. Egwene, now Amyrlin of the rebel Aes Sedai, and her forces lay siege to the White Tower, where Elaida wears the Amyrlin shawl. The Aes Sadai must be reunited to defend against the Dark One. And Rand al' Thor, the Dragon Reborn, faces his own demons, even though he has managed to cleanse the Dark One's taint from the males who can channel. As usual, Jordan's canvas is vast and his plotting intricate. Each of the many characters is as distinctively recognizable as any of those in the series' other volumes, while on all fronts, intrigues and dangers intensify. Must-reading for Jordan's huge and faithful following. Sally Estes

1.0 out of 5 stars Dismal performance, Jan 26 2005
By John Pasula (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
I just finished reading the book about 10-15 minutes ago.

Nothing happened in this book... nothing at all.

There is the extreme attention to detail, but the whole point of a book in a series is to advance the story line. This book really didn't do that.

It took me about 3 months to finish this book, when normally I can go through a 700 pager if it's good in a week or two.

It seemed too much like a chore to read this, not something that was fun.

Hopefully book 11 finishes the series, but for some reason I doubt it.

1.0 out of 5 stars There needs to be a plague..., Jun 12 2005
By Nicolette Horsthuis (Vancouver Island, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I can't stand the characters any longer. Rand is a snivelling, self absorbed, mopey, boring, weak... I have run out of descriptions to describe how loathesome he is. Thankfully he only entered about 15 of the 700 pages.

In fact, all the characters have become loathesome. I can barely tell them apart anymore. Maybe because they are all pretty much the same character in different clothes. Lots and lots of different clothes. This book would be definitely improved by a massive plague going through the world, wiping out half the characters. We wouldn't even miss them.

I join the other reviewers in grieving in the loss of what talent Jordan originally had. Perhaps he has massive writer's block and is disguising it with this drivel.

Get it from the library if you have insommnia. Sure-fire cure.

1.0 out of 5 stars 1.5 Stars! You've got to be kidding!, April 12 2005
I can comfortably say that I will never read one of Mr. Jordan's books, based on the trend of reviews since his first Wheel of Time book; however, I hope he continues with his uninspired and plot-sloppy writing because he has inadvertently generated some of the greatest book reviews I've ever read. At the time of my review, this 10th installment (10th, are you kidding? This guy should write for Reader's Digest.) earned two stars after 413 reviews...wow. How can a publishing company willfully continue to print material that engenders such distaste for literature? I truly believe that a boring fantasy author is as close as it gets to no activity in the frontal lobe (unless you're a waning fantasy-author's book cover artist; I have some Crayons, too, may I be an artist?)...it's not history, man! You're not writing a thesis on Peruvian bush weevils.

If Jordan's future books get any worse, and it sounds like he's beating a path in that direction, Mass Market Publishing will face the dilemma of supporting a Sominex-writing fantasy author, or risk having his increasingly tenuous fan base dig their eyes out with a bookmark. Neither path seems a very good source of future revenue.

Again, I will probably never read one of Jordan's books...but I can't wait for his next attempt in anticipation of the reviews it will get. I'm beside myself with excitement knowing that an uninspired fantasy will not read as good as the people who will eventually critique it. Keep it up, Robert!
