Review

“With the Black Company series Glen Cook single-handedly changed the face of fantasy—something a lot of people didn’t notice and maybe still don’t. He brought the story down to a human level, dispensing with the cliché archetypes of princes, kings, and evil sorcerers. Reading his stuff was like reading Vietnam War fiction on peyote.” —Steven Erikson, author of Gardens of the Moon

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Nov 10 2009

Great book, the ending was a bit predictable (by ending I'm talking last book, last 5 pages), but other than that A great read from beginning to end. Like eriksons malazan series but with less characters so a little easier to follow. Physically a great book too. Some paperbacks have the text right to the spine, but this book was laid out much nicer. A small thing but it made reading the book so much easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, April 15 2009

I found this book recommended in one of the lists on Amazon. I've been reading fantasy novels all of my life, but I'd never heard of Glen Cook. I can honestly say this is one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. Unlike most, its written from a first-person perspective. It took a little getting used to, but it really helped me to connect with the characters. And they aren't your usual bunch of heroes - this is a bunch of professional soldiers who have allot of flaws and don't always do the right thing. I had a tough time putting this book down. I highly recommend it.
