From Booklist

This variant of the Arthurian tales begins with Sulien apGwien's encounter with Jamish raiders, which makes her a lifelong foe of those invaders of her native Tir Tanagiri and draws her into supporting King Urdo, who rules at Caer Tanaga. He seeks to unite the squabbling nobles to drive out the invaders and restore peace. Walton writes with almost poetic skill, and the world she constructs is finely built despite the obviousness of her variations on Celtic and Norse cultures. She exercises her creativity more in realizing the Vincan empire and the local variant of Christianity. So open an adaptation of the Arthurian tales can hardly claim originality; it must stand or fall on its execution, which in this case is most worthy. Roland Green

Review

"Walton writes with an authenticity that never loses heart, a rare combination in a genre where we are so often offered one or the other. The King's Peace is a proof that no matter how mined-out a subject may seen, a dedicated writer can dig down to a true vein of legend and hammer out gold." -Robin Hobb"Beautifully and thought-provokingly tells a story set in a world and a history almost like ours, but different enough to be in itself a kind of elvenland. It's good to know that there will be more." -Poul Anderson

2.0étoiles sur 5 Narration was stilted....Not My cup of tea., Sep 22 2003
Par Un client
This review is from: The King's Peace (Hardcover)
I TRIED to read the "King's Peace. But I just can't abide poorly written first person narratives. (I'm not a big fan of First Person narratives to begin with), but poorly written ones are worse. Also, there is a large Dedication which takes up prime 'real estate' at the front of the book, followed by another narration about he main character 'looking back on her life.' For me, I just hate, hate, hate, knowing what will happen in advance. And this writing nearly ruined it for me.

As I progressed through the book, I found the dialog to be stilted and unrealistic, especially the internal dialog. This book was just NOT my cup of tea.

I did not particularly like this book. In fact it is the only book that i have ever put down. First of all I like romance in boks that I read and the fact that there wasn't any romance disappointed me. I could have gotten over that if there was some kind of friendly relationship, friends, family, somebody that she was close to (besides Garrah). It seemed to me that everybody that she became friends with died and when she did have a firendly relationship with somebody, Ms. Walton did not go into enough detail for me to care what actually happened to that character. I think that my main motivation for not wanting to conyimue reading this book was that i didn't care what happened, whicyh is very bad when reading any knid of book. In short I did not think that this book was worth reading, and I'm sorry if I gave away any of the story to those who are deciding whether to buy this book or not. I hope that I was helpful.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Unfulfilled promise, Sep 8 2003

This review is from: The King's Peace (Hardcover)
This book has two parts. Part one, though taking its time, has a good beginning and concludes with an epic battle. In between there are plenty of interesting characters and plenty of action. Part two, however, increasingly made me wonder "where is this going, is there going to be any action before the end of the book". It's true that the final 3 or so pages give a twist to the story, but they come too late.

One problem I have with this book is that the reader is deluged with names, names moreover in a strang language (Welsh?) so they don't stick in my memory. And right up to the last chapter the writer goes on introducing new peoples and heroes.

The bigger problem I have is with some of the characters. The main character is a strong woman, but I got squeamish realising how little she thinks about her son's she's given up to the monks. An assurance that "never a day goes by that I don't think of him" (paraphrased) is not enough if that comes once every 100 pages. Then there are Ulf and Conal. She comes to respect Ulf. Right. And that's enough to forget about that rape business, it seems. Conal sounds right from the start as the type she will come to love inspite of herself. His entry in the story is promising enough, but then he disappears, and it's never quite explained why she should hate him to begin with, or where he is off to after they first meet.

This book has the feel of a great story wanting to come out, but not quite succeeding.
