From Publishers Weekly

The weighty and grim sixth installment of Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen (chronologically following 2006's House of Chains, with references to 2007 tie-in Midnight Tides) is named for a newly minted company in the Malazan 14th Army, forged in a daring and nearly fatal effort to escape a city destroyed by fire by burrowing through its skeletal underbelly. The Bonehunters' return from the dead is a theme that appears throughout this volume, as the prophetess Sha'ik dies and is reborn as a plague maiden, warriors recover from hideous wounds, and seer Ganoes Paran strikes a bargain with the dread god Hood that just might end up saving the world. Erikson brings the bulk of his enormous cast together in one volume for the first time, an effort designed to keep fans engaged as myriad plot lines tangle and sprawl over an increasingly bleak and war-ravaged landscape. From Booklist

The fourth Malazan Book of the Fallen is aptly titled. The Malazan 14th Army warily combs the ruins of the Seven Cities Rebellion for what may be left of its dead, meanwhile straining what's left of its morale. The Crippled God has joined the pantheon, and at least half his numerous fellow deities are trying to expel him. A war of the gods impends, and while it will cost the usual high price in collateral damage among humans, Erikson will handle it with originality and strong impact, given that even the sympathetic characters are becoming people you wouldn't want holding your IOUs. 4.0étoiles sur 5 Continuing On..., Nov. 9 2006
Par vrai (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I have sympathy with the first reviewer; the book does seem flatter than the previous ones. That being said, there are a large number of stories being extended here from previous volumes; some of the problem is keeping them all straight. The layout of the text could have been improved.

There is only one truly new character (Karsa's companion); all others have appeared in previously in this series.

I find that concentrating on one story line at a time is an aid... once you've read the book completely at least once.

The crack another reviewer made concerning Robert Jordan is apt. It was possible to pick up any volume in the first five volumes of the series and enjoy the read, unlike 'The Wheel of Time' series. It is not the case here though; you really do need to read the second and fourth.

3.0étoiles sur 5 A transition book, Juil 17 2006

(REAL NAME)
I seem to be in the minority with this one, but I definitely found that this book was less enjoyable than the previous 5. It is still an absolute necessity to read to understand the story, but I somehow felt less for the new characters than I did in previous books. The resolution(s) at the end of the book seemed hasty and incomplete, I did not get the usual feeling of a literary dessert at the end of a very satisfying meal. It very much felt like a lead up to book 7 rather than a complete volume. Unlike Midnight Tides, which introduced a swath of new characters whom I grew to enjoy as the book moved along, the ones in this book felt flat and lifeless in comparison. The Bonehunters still maintains the vivid prose, gripping narrative and horrible deaths of previous volumes, but it really did seem to lack what made 1-5 really great. This is not the Robert Jordan effect of crapping out for 6 pointless books before starting to move forward again, it's more like a train that has been hurtling forward, and we happened to stop at a station to pick up passengars rather than at our destination. Still, buy it so you know what happens in book 7.

5.0étoiles sur 5 The Bonehunters... the epic Malazan saga continues!, Juil 13 2006
Par R. Nicholson - Voir tous mes commentaires
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
Another great addition to the ongoing Malazan fantasy/adventure from Steven Erikson.

This is the sixth in the " Malazan Book of the Fallen" series; and as with the previous books there are several different story lines developed early on that continue throughout the novel. Most of these individual tales begin in an area called "The Seven Cities" and then most (but not all) come together towards the end of the book at Malaz City (capital of the Malazian Empire).

This book introduces some new characters e.g. Heboric Ghost Hands, Greyfrog and others, as well as reacquainting us with several favorites from the 1st five books; e.g. Fiddler, Bottle, Kalam, Quick Ben, Apsalar, Mappo and Icarium just to mention a few. This book has all the components for a great fantasy read; there are creatures and people with magical abilities, demons, intrigue/betrayals, some great battles, harrowing journeys and even a sprinkling of humor here and there.

This novel is a daunting 884 pages long (including 3 maps of areas involved); but once I'd start reading, the time just seemed to fly by. If you enjoyed the other books in this series (and you really need to read the previous 5 books for this one to make any sense) you will be pleased with this latest effort by the author. Erikson's greatest skill is his story telling abilities and then being able to transpose his vivid imagination onto paper via the written word.

All in all a wonderful addition to complement the previous books in this addicting, epic series. I was sorry to see this novel end, and I can hardly wait for book 7. Highly recommended. 5 stars (more if I could)
