Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Terry Goodkind has always been stronger on visionary description than on explanation: Debt of Bones goes back to a time before the realms of The Sword of Truth were sundered by deadly barriers to explain much of what we have seen. At the same time, it is a moving human story rather than an appendix to larger texts; Abby, the young mother desperate to save her child, is placed in an impossible dilemma, and Goodkind is fascinated by the process whereby she comes to her eventual decision. He also shows us a younger, brasher, fiercer Zedd than the wise old sage we meet in the other novels, a man who has not yet formulated his devastatingly tough-minded instincts into a set of misleading proverbs. This impressive, tightly-driven novella is full of ingenious retro-fitting of information we already know the outcome of; we know that some of the decisions taken here will have consequences of which the characters cannot imagine and we find ourselves all the more torn by their dilemmas because of it. Anyone who has been moved and delighted by Goodkind's sequence cannot avoid reading this book, not just for its explanations but for its ruthless yet loving portrait of a group of flawed human beings trying to do the closest thing possible to the right thing. --Roz Kaveney --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Terry Goodkind (Faith of the Fallen) presents Debt of Bones, a prequel to his Sword of Truth series that involves series character First Wizard Zedd in the time before the Boundaries were drawn. Abby, a poor peasant who has an ancient claim on Zedd, asks the impossible of him to save her community, including her husband, child and father at the possible price of countless other lives. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the others., Jun 10 2002

This review is from: Debt of Bones (Hardcover)
The rating is a bit harsh, as it actually deserves a 2 1/2, but I`m comparing it to the other books, which would have been going at a steady four. The massive Sword of Truth books aroused great expectations of Debt of Bones, which I think have not been fulfilled. The book is short)in comparison with 400 page up books) and the storyline is weak. Fine, people want to know about Zedd and his life, but not really like this. Pieces of his story hidden in each book would have created a better effect. As it is this book contains no mention of the main characters of the series whatsoever, and is quite dissapointing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A long standing fan of Goodkind's, May 17 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Debt of Bones (Hardcover)
I have been reading Goodkind's books since the first day that Wizards First Rule made its appearance on the bookshelves across the country. I have read each and everyone of his books and loved this one almost as much as I loved his other novels. The book answers many of the questions that fans have had about Zed and Addie. It also leaves some questions open and yet to be resolved. For example: in the Wizard's First Rule, Addie speaks of her beloved Pel. In this book her husband's name is Philip, obviously something is missing here.

This aside, this is a great story of the first meeting between Addie and Zed who appear to know each other quite well in the Wizard's First Rule. It tells the tale of how Addie obtains the assistance of Zed to save her family and her village of Coney Reach and how Zed has earned the nickname "the trickster".

Those that enjoyed the other Sword of Truth books will definitely enjoy this one. But be prepared to complete reading of this novel in approximately one or two hours - its that good. I give the book four stars rather than the maximum five because, while it is a great book, its not as good, in my opinion, as some of his other work.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is one you could miss, Oct 7 2009
By Momma in Calgary (Calgary, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
I'm a huge fan of the Sword of Truth series, but was a little disappointed in this book. Not that it's a bad book, but it lacked the depth of his others (it is quite short to be fair) and doesn't really add anything to the series. Maybe we learn a bit about how hard it was for Zed during the war with D'hara. In sum, a forgettable light read.
